Lego DC Comics Superheroes: The Flash Review
Written by Andrei Logigan, Edited by James Harvey

Focusing on everyone’s favorite speedster, Lego DC Super Heroes: The Flash is absolutely fun, riddled with surprises and providing a solid look into the character’s backstory. It’s great to see The Flash get the spotlight here, as he’s often relegated to a supporting character role for most of the DC Animation output. If fans are looking at a great animated movie that’s does The Flash justice, then look no further than Lego DC Super Heroes: The Flash!

Reverse-Flash manipulates the Speed Force to put The Flash into a time loop that forces him to relive the same day over and over again. The Flash must find a way to restore time and finally apprehend his worst enemy before all is lost.

And while this is the Flash’s movie through and through, some of DC Comics’ other well-known heroes get the spotlight. The Atom has a hilarious subplot that finds him struggling to maneuver the world while shrunk down. Zatanna and Dr. Fate are also brought into the mix as The Flash looks to regain his speed, resulting in a hilarious musical number and one of the most hilarious interpretations of Dr. Fate to date. And the best part? Even with all the comedic beats, the movie still remains pretty faithful to each character’s comic book roots. Even though Lego DC Super Heroes: The Flash is targeted at a younger audience, writers Jim Krieg and Jeremy Adams litter it with nods and comic book references for the comic loving parents in the room (and these nods are never overbearing, keeping the pace moving quick and breezy).

It’s worth mentioning that this rendition of Dr. Fate is absolutely hilarious, and is easily one of the best gags of the entire Lego DC Super Heroes home video line. The musical number between The Flash, Zatanna and Fate is hands-down amazing and alone is worth checking out the film.

Thankfully, Lego DC Super Heroes: The Flash also handles the film’s main antagonist nicely, too. The Reverse-Flash here is a solid antagonist both in his plan to subdue the Flash and in character as well. He’s an enjoyable villain who is able to propel the story with a solid plot against our heroes - The Flash and the Justice League - while also coming across as a fully-developed character. A host of other villains appear in short cameo roles – including the likes of the Joker, Captain Cold and Deathstroke – and they’re hilarious in their bit parts.

While The Flash gets the focus in this nifty animated feature, the Justice League also plays a crucial supporting role. Batman and Superman get arguably the lion’s share, but Aquaman gets a hilarious cameo and The Atom (mentioned above) plays a slightly larger role than expected. Even Firestorm gets a nice share of screen time, a nice nod to the character’s stint on the team ages ago in the DC Comics universe. It’s a great cast of supporting heroes, deftly handled by the creative team as they never overshadow The Flash or grab away screen time.

Overall, Lego DC Super Heroes: The Flash is fun and shows this home video line is not slowing down anytime soon. Each film manages to superbly mix big action and solid jokes with a cool ‘go with the flow’ attitude. Plots are over-the-top and sometimes make little sense, but … it’s all fun. Plot reveals are usually littered with laughs and one-liners, and Lego DC Super Heroes: The Flash is no exception. If you’re looking for an enjoyable all ages animated adventure starring your favorite DC Comics heroes, and a great introduction to the Flash mythos for new fans, you got one right here. Recommended!
