Batman Unlimited: Monster Mayhem Blu-ray Review
by James Harvey

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment delivers a respectable Blu-ray release for Batman Unlimited: Monster Mayhem, though one that lacks a little compared to its predecessor. While the movie's presentation is gorgeous and nearly perfect, the bonus material does leave a little to be desired.

Looking first at the video and audio quality, it's hard to find a fault. The video transfer is crystal clear with deep colors and a vibrant palette. There doesn't seem to be any major colorbanding or macroblocking anywhere to be found. In fact, the video quality here is likely above that of the Justice League: Gods and Monsters Blu-ray release from just a few weeks back. I hesitate to call the transfer perfect, but there are no blemishes to be found here. And the same can be said about the idea. The six-channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is aggressive and thunderous. Everything just pops with crystal clarity. Nothing is muddled, buried or hard to hear, but distinct and as clear as can be. Despite being center focused, all the speakers manage to get a thorough workout. This film has a wealth of action sequences, and you won't miss a second with this pretty spot-on audio mix.

Moving on to the bonus content, it's a bit lighter compared to Batman Unlimited: Animal Instinct, but there's still some nice worthwhile content to be found. The 11-minute "Gotham of Tomorrow: Designing a Future World" looks at the film's design scene for its futuristic take on Gotham City. It's actually a nice, thorough look at the how the designers of the film came up with its overall look of the city and its influences. A surprising extra.

Following that is the inclusion of 10 DC Nation animated shorts featuring the likes of Animal Man, Green Arrow, The Riddler, Shazam and Deadman. As always, every one of these shorts are fun to watch, all featuring some really creative work and excellent gags. It's very light-hearted, fun stuff, all managing to pack quite a wallop in the short 45-60-second runtime. It'd be great to see all of these collected on their own release. And speaking of animated shorts, the continued exclusion of the Batman Unlimited shorts is ... kinda baffling ...

The disc is wrapped up with the Batman:The Brave and The Bold episode "Mayhem of the Music Meister!" (oddly, the Batman: The Brave and The Bold episode on the included DVD is "Emperor Joker!") along with an assortment of trailers and both the aforementioned DVD and digital copy of the film.

There's no bonus figurine included with this time around, which is surprising given the wealth of toy-friendly content in the film that could support a dozen plastic trinkets. The collectible Deluxe Edition of Batman Unlimited: Animal Instinct featured a time flying bat figurine. Not a big loss, but I'd like to see Warner Bros. Home Entertainment continue to support physical releases of their animated content with exclusive initiatives like figurines and other packaged goodies.

A small but solid helping of bonus content makes for a worthwhile Blu-ray release for Batman Unlimited: Monster Mayhem. Again, the Blu-ray release is the way to go to get the best possible version of this film, especially when it comes to top-of-the-line audio and quality. The fun Bat-flick looks darn near perfect. The bonus content, while small, is good. The featurette is more thorough than expected and the bonus shorts are as fun as can be. Most important, Batman Unlimited: Monster Mayhem itself is a fun movie that's worth the purchase alone. These all-ages Batman Unlimited movies are a great addition to one's collection and a great place to start with potential new fans. Highly Recommended.
