Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox Blu-ray Review

In all the years that Warner Home Video has been releasing these DC Universe Animated Original Movie titles to Blu-ray, the quality has remained relatively consistent. Sometimes the bonus features may dip up or down but, overall, there's usually a consistent level of quality. Much like with previous installments, the studio has given Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox a good presentation, including a nice bundle of bonus content. The Blu-ray Combo packs come with Blu-ray, DVD, and Ultraviolent copies of the movie.

The audio/video presentation is, of course, very excellent. It’s not perfect, but up to the standards of previous DC Universe Animated Original Movie releases. The video is pretty crisp, but there is some color banding that pops in from time to time, a bit more than I’d like. Given the abundance of the color red, expect to see a fair amount of micro-blocking. It's not really consistent - sometimes the red color will pop, but other times it's visibly hampered by blocking. And this doesn't appear to be the fault of the transfer, but of the source material, and this is a regular occurrence that viewers of these titles should be familiar. The DTS-HD MA 5.1 English track is gets a solid workout courtesy of the rather heavy action pieces, which basically takes up the vast majority of the film's running time. It's particularly effective in the climax as everything came to a head. Without giving spoilers, everything goes to crap within the span of a few minutes and leads up to this great bombastic moment, then nothing but silence...the audio transfer handles that superbly.

Moving on to the bonus content, Warner Home Video brings in a solid commentary track and a couple great featurettes. The featurettes focus on the idea of time travel and Flash's villains and, frankly, the time travel-focused discussion is far more interesting even if there's not enough time to discuss the idea in-depth. Still, we get a shout-out to the Cosmic Treadmill during the time travel featurette, which is chuckle-worthy to hear in a serious discussion about the possibilities of bending time and space. The villains featurette provides a good overview of Flash's major foes ("Flashpint" comic writer Geoff John's favorite villain is Captain Cold, whom he has plastered on his office door), but nothing a quick web search couldn't wrangle together. Still, it's great to see Flash's Rogue's Gallery get their proper due here. The "My Favorite Villain! The Flash Bad Guys" featurette runs roughly 19 minutes, and "A Flash in Time" runs just shy of 23 minutes. An excellent commentary from the filmmakers – including producer James Tucker, writer Johns, screenwriter Jim Krieg, and director Jay Oliva - is included and definitely worth a listen. There's a nice amount of discussion about both the original comic mini-series - what it led to and what resulted from it - and the animated adaptation - why is was chosen, what was changed and so forth. A few neat tidbits are dropped, like how Tucker wanted to do an animated short focused on Flashpoint Batman, and the idea of a Looney Tunes-esque Flash series.

Tucker also makes an interesting comment in the commentary that I want to make a note of. If this Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox title sells well, we could possibly see more Flashpoint-inspired material, such as an animated adaptation (in whatever form) of the Batman "Flashpoint" material. He drives the point that these need to sell. So, to all you pirates out there, stop illegally downloading an instead actually support these titles. You want more variety, more titles, more everything? Well ... buy these movies!

The disc is wrapped up with four bonus episodes - Batman: The Brave and The Bold "Requiem for a Speedster," Justice League Unlimited "Flash and Substance," and Justice League "Legends, Part One" and "Legends, Part Two" - along with a preview for the next DC Universe Animated Original Movie Justice League: War (which looks interesting), host of trailers, and both an additional DVD and UltraViolet copy of Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.

Warner Home Video has given Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox a fine Blu-ray home video release. The audio and video quality is on par for these titles – great but with a few issues – and the overall bonus content package is pretty satisfying. While definitely divisive, I think Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox will find a home in the collection of many DC Comic book fans. While a handful of viewers may fall into the middle ground with this feature - I still think fans will either love it or hate it, which should result in some really interesting discussions. It's packed with action from start to finish, features a great cast of characters and actors, and has a pretty compelling story. It may stumble a couple times here or there but, in the end, I found myself enjoying it. It's a movie that wears you down by the end, after watching so much death and destruction that you find yourself rooting for the Flash to find the solution. So, yes, this releases comes Recommended to own, making a worthy addition to any fan's collection.
