Legion of Super Heroes
#10 - The Substitutes
Original Airdate - February 17th, 2007
It's that time of year again -- Legion Auditions! This year's crop is hardly promising, with most hopefuls turning out to be comic duds. But when the Legion is overwhelmed fighting a mysterious foe in Earth's upper atmosphere, a group of rejects takes it upon themselves to save the world below... with outrageous results.

Review:
Ah...where to begin? Let's see...So, the new Legionnaires are Matter-Eater Lad (no surprise) and the Waid-Kitson Star Boy (Would've preferred the Silver Age Thom Kallor, especially with his recent JSA appearances.) Quite a few cameos, too - Element Lad, Sun Boy, Blok, and Tyroc. Starfinger appears to have the look of Starfinger II and the powers of Starfinger I from the comics. Surprised to see him cast as a comedy villain, but then I don't believe the serious version was ever that popular. Probably, he was selected for the role because Pulsar Stargrave has too much of a history to introduce without explanation.
But on to our feature characters - Yes, they will be called, "The Legion of Substitute Heroes!" Nothing says Legion Auditions like a rampaging plant monster. The Legionnaires got off easy this time: some property damage and minor injuries. No radiation poisoning, amnesia or Double-Header getting in a fight with himself. Would've liked to have seen Fire Lad. Just to see him sneeze and the resulting destruction.
I just knew Stone Boy was going to fall on the villain. It's his trademark. Liked the bit about him calculating out his trajectory. Loved his dramatic if pointless audition, and his valiant if pointless attempt to stop those crooks. I hope this isn't the last we'll see of the Subs. Maybe they can have a spotlight episode each season.
