The Hobgoblin was created by Norman Osborn to kill The Kingpin, but the hired gun ultimately failed when he was foiled by Spider-Man. Tired of being treated like a small-time hood, The Hobgoblin used the information he acquired to temporarily overthrown The Kingpin, but was eventually toppled again by the Web-Head.

Spider-Man carries a strong hatred for The Hobgoblin; he injured his Aunt May and kidnapped his best friend and roommate, Harry Osborn. The Hobgoblin con tinued to pursue his criminal ambitions. In an attempt to gain more power, he dated and propsed to the wealthy Felicia Hardy but was also eventually thwarted and finally arrested. He remains in lock-up, biding his time until he can escape.
