Herbert Landon despises mutants and set out to use his scientific research to rid the world of mutants. Using the research notes of a formula that was developed by his former colleague, Henry McCoy, Herbert his company began producing a chemical designed to kill all mutants. Once The Hobgoblin discovered what he was doing, he forced Landon to pay him off to keep the secret, but that secret soon became public knowledge. After a brawl ensued between Spider-Man, Hobgoblin and Wolverine, Landon was doused in the chemical, and turned into a mutant himself! After being released from the hospital and brandished a criminal, Landon, now in a half-human/half-mutant form, began to work as the Kingpin's assistant, replacing Smythe.
