The Scorpion started out as private investigator working for J. Jonah Jameson to uncover the connection between Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Jameson later offered Gargan the opportunity to publicly defeat Spider-Man by undergoing an operation to splice his genetic codes with that of a scorpion. After he defeated Spider-Man, he discovered the operation permenantly turned him into a mutated freak. Desperate to find a cure for his condition, Scorpion went on a rampage in New York until he was eventually thwarted by Spider-Man. After joining the Insidious Six and failing to kill Spider-Man yet again, The Scorpion decided to continue his work on finding a cure for his condition so he could marry Sarah, his girlfriend.
