An accomplished scientist who eventually hit hard time, Spencer Smythe was the man who originally designed the Spider Slayers for Norman Osborn. Smythe hoped that once Spider-Man was captured, Norman would create a new chair for his paralyzed son. Smythe was eventually caught in a lab explosion at Oscopr and was presumed dead. This wasn't the case; the Kingpin had him frozen in order to convince Alistair to work for him. Once Allistair discovered the truth, he began devoting his full attention into reviving his father.
