Eddie Brock began as a rival of Peter Parker from the Daily Bugle. He, like his boss, J. Jonah Jameson, hated Spider-Man with a passion. He was fired from The Daily Bugle after falsely identifying Flash Thompson as Spider-Man on national TV, tarnishing the rep of The Daily Bugle. He was later rehired after he lied and stated he had photographic evidence of Spider-Man committing theft. Once Jameson discovered that Brock was lying, he fired him again. Brock eventually came into contact with a symbiote, the same one that attached itself to Spider-Man for a short time, and bonded with it - becoming Venom. Like Brock, the suit hated Parker and fuled his rage.

Endlessly tormenting Spider-Man, Venom had all of Spider-Man's powers and memories. He would prove to be a formidable foe, but one that Spider-Man would eventually conquer. Eddie was seperated from the symbiote as a result and commited to an asylum where he eventually fell in love with his doctor, Ashley Kafka. But that's not the end of it ...

Venom returned when the evil interdimensional creature Dormammu brought the symbiote back to Eddie. Indebted to Dormammu, Venom agreed to steal an interdimensional transporter, a machine that could allow Dormammu to escape his alternate dimension. Unfortunately for Venom, his symbiote reproduced, and Carnage was born. Realizing that Carnage was truly evil, he assisted Spider-Man and Iron Man in bringing him down by trapping him in an alternate dimension. Unfortunately, Venom ended up also trapped in the alternate dimension ... waiting to return ...
