Episode Review - Spider-Man: The 1967 Animated Series
Episode #29 - Phantom from the Depths of Time
Original Episode Airdate - November 2, 1968
Dr. Manta uses a special organ to enslave inhabitants of an island to mine a valuable ore.
Review and Media By Jon T
This episode is famously one of two 1967 Spider-Man episodes that were adapted from Krantz Films' concurrent Rocket Robin Hood science-fiction show. Incidentally, this is also the first of a few episodes in which only Spider-man is seen, with no sign of Peter Parker.
What can I say? With this episode's plot and animation being taken from another, totally unrelated show, Spider-Man just seems totally out of place. This Phantom (as opposed to the first season one), while having a distinctive insectoid look, doesn't particularly act originally.
Spider-Man and a space-age Rocket Robin Hood story just don't mix easily. The proof is here.
