Static Shock Crew Talks "Duped" & "Jimmy"
by Jim Harvey

Toon Zone was able to get in touch with Len Uhley and Dave Chlystek to discuss two new upcoming episodes of Static Shock, currently airing weekends on Kids'WB! First up are Len Uhley's thoughts:

"Duped, as you've read in the Kids' WB publicity release, has a really terrific cast -- AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys, Coolio, Malcolm Jamal-Warner, as well as our usual superb voice cast. It tells the tale of the metahuman Replikon, who uses his chameleon-like powers to sabotage Rubberband Man's long-awaited break in the music business (provided by AJ McLean). Seems Replikon and Rubberband Man were acquaintances back in the day (pre-Bang Baby explosion), and there's some unresolved issues there that play out in a big, bad way. Christopher Simmons and I cowrote the episode, which was directed by Denys Cowan."

"Jimmy is one of the "issue" episodes we did in the second season, dealing with violence on school campuses. I dare not give away the huge surprise in this show, but suffice it so say that what transpires is about as dramatic as things get in Saturday Morning television. The episode was written by Dwayne McDuffie and directed by Joe Sichta."

Static Shock has had success with other issue-oriented episodes such as the fan-acclaimed Sons of the Father and the recent Frozen Out. It is one of the few modern animated series dealing with important real-life issues, such as racism and mental illness. Dave Chlystek was able to provide a bit more information on the Jimmy episode:

"Jimmy deals with a Columbine-esque situation. It is a very, very serious episode. Much like "Frozen Out". You gotta love Static for that very reason. It is the only show that could do these kind of shows and then follow it up with a Brain Puppets or Big Leagues."
