Review

Anyone who has taken even a casual interest in Teen Titans is bound to know the characters by now. Beast Boy is the irritating comic relief character, Raven is the moody one and Starfire is the adorable alien.

Which basically means when you get their spotlight episodes, Beast Boy gets a comedic tone, Raven gets a moody, often creepy tone and Starfire gets a ‘fun’ tone, which isn’t to be taken too seriously. The quality often varies; for example, Beast Boy, the comedic choice is arguably the least funny of all the Titans. One thing that is consistent however, not matter what way you look at it, is that Robin kicks ass.

In this episode, we see Robin at his best, determined to find Slade, who he refuses to believe has died. It becomes clear that it’s been haunting him for a while, and the episodes kicks into high gear once Slade does return. Despite the rest of The Titans claims that Robin’s imagining it all, manufactured by his obsessive nature.

The mystery was a good one, deep inside I knew Slade wasn’t back, but it the episode was written so well that it was hard to dismiss Robin’s claims. We all know villains rarely die, and Slade was the main villain… would they really get rid of him, without bringing him back?

Animation wise, the episode was consistent. Robin’s fighting himself was done very well, and Slade looked as menacing as ever. One of the only things bringing the episode down was Beast Boy’s stupid sneezing fit. It’s been done before with Starfire, here was a cheap, irritating impersonation. The sooner I see someone slap Beast Boy, the better.

Overall, it was a good episode. It doesn’t top Red X, but it remains one of the season’s better episodes. It also had a damn creepy ending.
