Review
I’m probably going to surprise a few people by saying I didn’t think
this episode was half bad. How do I know it will surprise people?
Well it surprised me just now as I typed that.
When you break it down, this episode really didn’t have a whole lot
going for it. If it felt familiar to you, it’s probably because in
Justice League Unlimited's “Chaos at the Earth’s Core”, we
got an identical location—dinosaurs and all. Only in Teen Titan’s
version, there’s only two inhabitants among all these dinosaurs: a
strange alien girl named Kole and a Tarzan-like man named Gnarrk.
Not to deny Kole’s cool design and powers, but how come she gets
sole billing in the title? Gnarrk’s just as cool…hell, he used her
as a freakin’ sword!
The story was generic Titans fluff. Dr. Light gets a whole episode
to himself this time, though comparing it to his comic book
counterpart in present-day comics, he’s nothing more than a sissy in
a Shriek (Batman Beyond) outfit. He provides good comic
relief though, notably in the end scene with him and Raven.
It is a real shame that the fights in Titans have either become
boring or just unimpressive to me. I’m sure the kids still love it,
but anymore it just hasn’t touched the bar that “X” set in season
three; I know it’s not like I should expect an awesome fight scene
in every episode, but it sure would be great to get a nicely
choreographed scene. I will admit Raven’s enveloping of Beast Boy
was pretty neat to see.
What I enjoyed best about this show was the music. McCuistion threw
in one hell of a rockin’ good score to go along with the episode.
There was some really good music in the fight scenes and it really
stood out. Kudos on the sound track, it was really quite good.
Not too much else left to talk about; the characters of Kole and
Gnarrk are nothing to get that excited about and the episode in
itself felt very much like a retread of past Titans adventures.
Nearly sixty shows into its life, Titans is starting to lose
its steam, but it’s still got a few fun kicks left in it. Here’s
hoping future episodes are more original and entertaining.
