Green Lantern: Beware My Power 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review
By James Harvey

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment brings John Stewart’s origin story to physical and digital media with the home video release of Green Lantern: Beware My Power, and the studio does right by this latest DC Universe Movie title. Even though it’s not overflowing with bonus features, the extra material here is pretty fantastic, and fans of Green Lantern will unquestionably gobble it up.

Looking first at the audio and visual quality for Green Lantern: Beware My Power‘s 4K UltraHD Blu-ray release and it’s another home-run for the studio. The 4K 2160p transfer is especially fantastic, with everything down the smallest detail popping out as clear as can be. With its deep blacks and vibrant colors, the visuals here look flat-out great. The DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix is just as good. Dialogue is centered and pushed to the front, action beats hit appropriately hard, and the mix’s atmospheric work nicely spreads throughout all the channels (and it’s really effective for many of the movie’s more chaotic/cosmic settings). All in all, it’s top-notch.

Moving on to the bonus content, the main extra is the 31-minute featurette ” John Stewart: The Power and the Glory ,” which covers the creation and history of John Stewart. Packed with appearances from notable creators involved with the character of John Stewart over the years, including the character’s animated iterations (including Aldis Hodge and Phil LaMarr), this feature ends up being an engrossing and legitimately interesting look at Stewart’s importance in the comics and pop culture landscape. In a nice touch, Dwayne McDuffie’s work with Stewart on Justice League Unlimited gets a well-deserved shout-out (“He was golden,” and elevated everything he touched, says Bruce Timm in the feature). The feature also notes Green Lantern: Beware my Power is hitting shelves during the 50th anniversary of Stewart’s first appearance. It’s such a great watch and nearly worth the cost of admission alone.

From there, the disc wraps up with two episodes from Justice League (“In Blackest Night, Part 1” and “Part 2,” both in 1080p high-definition), along with previews for the previously-released The Death of Superman and Batman: Bad Blood. There is no preview included for the next entry in the DC Universe Movie line (don’t worry, more are coming).

To quickly compare the 4K Itunes release, it’s a fine alternative for fans opting to go digital. While the picture quality can’t match the 4K disc release, it still easily surpasses the standard 1080p HD version of Green Lantern: Beware My Power on disc. The bonus feature line up, with the exception of the two Justice League episodes, which aren’t included in the movie’s iTunes release.

It’s also worth noting that the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD physical releases of Green Lantern: Beware My Power have different images on the packaging’s spine. While the Blu-ray release continues the spine’s connected artwork from previous DC Universe Movie releases, the 4K Ultra HD release re-uses the spine art from the Blu-ray release of Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One. A minor complaint but still a slightly frustrating one (and one likely caused by the multiple planned Batman: The Long Halloween releases).

Considering all that’s included on disc, it’s a good collection of material that offers a satisfying look at Stewart throughout the ages. New and classic material, plus a lengthy look at the character’s history, is a fair shake of material, really. True, there could always be more, but those days seem long gone, and what Warner Bros. Home Entertainment offers here with Green Lantern: Beware My Power is a product that’s worth picking up, especially for John Stewart fans. And for viewers looking to watch Green Lantern: Beware My Power in the best possible format, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release is unquestionably the winner. With an enjoyable feature presentation and a nice batch of bonus content to watch, Green Lantern: Beware My Power comes as Recommended!

Please note that while Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided The World’s Finest with a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray copy of Green Lantern: Beware My Power to review, that had no bearing on the product’s final assessment. The author did purchase a copy of the film on iTunes for completion and comparison purposes.
