PAGE ONE – FOUR PANELS
Panel One: Establishing shot taking up ½ to 2/3 of the page,
looking down from the ceiling. Interior of a psychological
therapist’s office, decorated with books and comfortable
furniture. The shrink, DR. RAINES, stands in the middle of the
room, greeting her patient. She is dressed in smart business
attire and is rather attractive. Her patient, BRUCE WAYNE, is
dressed in a suit and is playing up the playboy image.
DR. RAINES (1): I know you have an aversion to therapy, Mr.
Wayne, but it was you who signed the contracts for quarterly
employee evaluations.
WAYNE (2): Ok, doc, but let’s hurry. I tee off in an hour.
Panels Two through Four: All equal in size, they line the bottom
of the page.
Panel Two: Dr. RAINES directs Bruce to the couch; a fine piece
of leather furniture if ever there was one. Bruce starts to look
uneasy, as if he has something to hide (!).
DR. RAINES (3): I want you to relax.
Panel Three: RAINES takes a seat off to the side, slightly OP,
as Bruce eases into the couch, but he doesn’t lie down. Rather,
he slumps back looking like he’d rather be elsewhere.
DR. RAINES (4): Today, we’re going to try some free association.
I’ll say a word, and you tell me the first thing that comes to
mind.
DR. RAINES (5): “Car.”
Panel Four: Smaller version of Panel One, from above (zooming
out), fitting both Raines and Bruce in the panel.
WAYNE (5): Benz.
PAGE TWO – TWELVE PANELS
NOTE TO ARTIST:
PAGES TWO THROUGH FIVE: These pages will be formatted the same
way. All will have Nine Panels (PAGE TWO, being the only
exception, will have Twelve) that will be equal in size in both
length and width. Every Panel on the left of the page will have
Dr. RAINES. Every panel on the right will have Bruce. The middle
panels will represent Bruce’s thoughts. To explain and go
forward in the story a bit, Dr. RAINES is performing some
simple, painless psychoanalysis. However, even a simple
psychological examination is an exercise in restraint for Bruce
Wayne. He must be VERY guarded in what he says so as not to
reveal anything that would lead anyone to believe that he has a
double life. So, what we are seeing is Bruce, on the right hand
side of the pages, answering the questions in a very guarded,
almost practiced, manner. Meanwhile, we, the reader, can see
what is really going on in his mind by looking to the middle
panel.
NOTE TO COLORIST:
All of these middle panels should be monochromatic, possibly all
in gray tones.
Panel One: Dr. RAINES looks down at her clipboard.
DR. RAINES (1): “Black.”
Panel Two: In shadows, Batman drops down into an alley, casting
a shadow on some thugs.
Panel Three: Bruce strokes his tie.
BRUCE (2): Tie.
Panel Four: Raines looks to Bruce and says…
DR. RAINES (3): “Green.”
Panel Five: A close up shot of Poison Ivy. Although this is
monochromatic, there’s no mistaking that when Bruce thinks of
“green,” he thinks of Ivy.
Panel Six: Bruce smiles uneasily, if only to throw the doctor
off.
BRUCE (4): Money.
Panel Seven: RAINES looks directly at the reader, into the
“camera.”
DR. RAINES (5): “Work.”
Panel Eight: Batman sifts through clues at a crime scene. There
is police tape around the room, and he is, naturally, in the
dark.
Panel Nine: Bruce scratches his chin.
BRUCE (6): Hmm…
Panel Ten: Dr. Raines is thrown off by Bruce’s inability to
answer the question. She can’t understand how one person
wouldn’t have a definition of the word.
DR. RAINES (7): The first thing that comes to mind when I say,
“work.”
DR. RAINES (8): It’s not a hard question, Mr….
Panel Eleven: Batman is analyzing clues on the Bat-Computer in
the Batcave.
Panel Twelve: Bruce shrugs his shoulders and, with a goofy smile
on his face, he says…
BRUCE (8): That’s the thing that Alfred does, right?
PAGE THREE – NINE PANELS
Panel One: Exasperated, Dr. Raines tries an alternate route.
DR. RAINES (1): “Trust.”
Panel Two: A Worlds Finest shot of Batman shaking Superman’s
hand.
Panel Three: Bruce settles into the couch.
BRUCE (2): Fund.
Panel Four: Dr Raines continues.
DR. RAINES (3): “Loyal.”
Panel Five: A snapshot of Nightwing, Batgirl, and Robin.
Panel Six: Bruce smiles.
BRUCE (4): Dog.
Panel Seven: Dr. Raines fixes her glasses.
DR. RAINES (5): “Play.”
Panel Eight: Batman KO’s The Riddler, sending him “flying”
toward the reader.
Panel Nine: BIG smile on Bruce’s face. The playboy smile.
BRUCE (7): Vicky, Silver, Julie, Vesp---
DR. RAINES (8): (OP) One is enough, thank you.
PAGE FOUR – NINE PANELS
Panel One: Dr. Raines tilts her head.
DR. RAINES (1): “Good.”
Panel Two: Shot of Jim Gordon flanked by officers.
Panel Three: Bruce has a content look on his face.
BRUCE (2): Charity.
Panel Four: Dr. Raines looks into the camera, brow furrowed,
making a sour face (acting out her next word).
DR. RAINES (3): “Evil.”
Panel Five: The Batmobile chases The Joker and Harley Quinn, who
are driving off in bumper cars. The Joker has a bomb with a lit
fuse in his hands and is driving with his feet. Riding shotgun
with Harley is a bound hostage.
Panel Six: Bruce’s brow furrows. He almost gives himself away.
BRUCE (4): Taxes.
Panel Seven: Dr. Raines smirks at his response.
DR. RAINES (5): “Friend.”
Panel Eight: Two-Face being led away in a straight jacket.
Batman looks down.
Panel Nine: Bruce looks up, juxtaposing his body language as
Batman in the last panel. He wishes he didn’t have to say this,
but…
BRUCE (6): Foe.
PAGE FIVE – NINE PANELS
Panel One: Dr. Raines is looking down at her clipboard.
DR. RAINES (1): “Happiness.”
Panel Two: Portrait of the Wayne Family, before Crime Alley.
Panel Three: Bruce is suddenly quiet. He is visibly taken aback
by the question.
Panel Four: Dr. Raines looks up and notices that Bruce has stood
up. He should be seen walking OP.
DR. RAINES (2): Mr. Wayne?
Panel Five: We see the afternoon skyline of Gotham City, tall
buildings in an Art Deco setting.
Panel Six: Bruce stands by the window and looks out.
Panel Seven: Same shot as Panel Five, but this time, it is night
and the Bat-Signal is lit above the skyline.
Panel Eight: At this point, we are no longer using the
monochromatic coloring. Batman stands on a gargoyle.
Panel Nine: Batman looks out at the city and says…
BATMAN (3): Gotham.
