OVERVIEW

The Basics
Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts is a direct-to-video animated superhero film. Released for Digital Download on April 28th, 2015, and then for Blu-ray and DVD on May 12th, 2015, the all-ages animated movie features Batman and a band of DC Comics heroes doing battle against The Penguin and a collection of animal-based bad guys. The animated film is inspired by the Mattel toyline of the same name.

Synopsis
When Gotham City is plagued by a rash of bizarre crimes committed by the animal-inspired villain squad, the Animilitia (made up of Silverback, Cheetah, Killer Croc and Man-Bat), Batman swings into action to investigate. But could the Animilita be working for powerful businessman Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin? How does Cobblepot's new invention of robotic Cyber Animals fit into the mix? In the end, it'll take the combined forces of Batman, Green Arrow, Flash, Nightwing and Red Robin to fight off these animal instincts!

History
After a tease of the Batman Unlimited brand name at the 2014 Licensing Expo, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment officially announced the Batman Unlimited animation initiative on January 29th, 2015. Unveiled as part of a new animation/toyline endeavor between Warner Bros. Consumer Products, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Animation, Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts acts as the first installment of what is planned to be an ongoing series of animated programming based on the Mattel toyline of the same name. The initiative includes at least two animated features, a series of animated shorts and a mobile app. These projects will be released in conjunction with special action figures tying into said animated content, such as a wave of action figures with accessories, a new Batmobile, and the all-new CybeRex robot dinosaur, all set to be featured in the Batman Unlimited cartoons. Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts' May 12th, 2015 release date was the first official project announced, with a series of animated shorts set to be released during 2015, followed by a second Batman Unlimited animated movie in Fall 2015.

DC Comics master costume partner, Rubie's Costumes, will also support the new content with a line of inspired-by dress-up and costumes; and toymaker Thinkway will introduce new Batman Unlimited-themed role-play accessories. Batman Unlimited is also slated to have a major QSR partner in 2015, with other key categories, such as apparel, to be announced at a later time.

The official announcement for the home video release of Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts, on February 3rd, 2015, provided further details on the title, including the addition of an exclusive toy packaged with the movie. The toy, packaged exclusively with the Blu-ray feature, is based on a robot featured in the movie.
