Spider-Man: The Animated Series "Peter Finds Mary-Jane" Script Treatment

Did you know series producer John Semper Jr. created a Spider-Man: The Animated Series script treatment called "Peter Finds Mary Jane?" The script tied up a loose end or two from the fan-favorite animated series, and provided a glimpse at how Semper would've concluded the series if given the chance today. The treatment was given to patrons who donated to his War of the Rocket Men crowd-funding project in 2016.

If given the chance to revisit and wrap up Spider-Man: The Animated Series in present-day, how would Semper do it? Check out the summary below! Keep in mind the treatment was written in 2016, is not canon, and features elements created after the show's conclusion in 1998.

Peter Finds Mary Jane

Separated from Madame Web while traveling through time and space, after already nearly rescuing Mary Jane Watson once and damaging Web's life support chair in the process, Spider-Man finds himself in a dimension similar to London in the early 1900s. While there, he discovers that not only is "Jack the Ripper" at large, but is actually his old foe, Carnage! After Spider-Man thwarts his attack on an innocent bystander, though damaging his web-shooters in the process, Carnage runs off while Spider-Man disguises himself to blend in as Peter Parker and search for Mary Jane.

Elsewhere, Mary Jane drops out of a portal into the same world, where she comes face-to-face with this dimension's J. Jonah Jameson and Flash Thompson, who have come from New York to get the scoop on Jack the Ripper. Mary Jane has amnesia and is eventually found by two streetwalkers, Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes, who offer help.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man spots both Green Goblin and Mysterio, but quickly realizes they are native to this dimension and run a circus. The Green Goblin and Mysterio, here Harry Osborn and Quintin Beck, provide food, shelter, and help Peter fix his web-shooters. Beck also introduces Spider-Man to his friend, H.G. Wells. Spider-Man soon discovers Wells is working on a time-machine and that same machine must have been what caused himself, Madame Web, Carnage, and Mary Jane to come to his reality.

Peter then takes Wells, Osborn, and Beck to Madame Web's damaged chair by using his Spider-Tracer, and convinces Wells to help repair the chair so that he could return home with Mary Jane and Carnage. To aid in the search for Mary Jane, Spidey enlists the help of Sherlock Holmes.

Holmes is able to quickly deduce that Mary Jane is likely at Whitechapel, where she can blend in easily with the crowds. Spider-Man, Holmes and John Watson all make their way there, while at the same time Mary Jane continues to work on recovering her memory. Thompson, Jameson, and Catherine and Elizabeth, all aid Mary Jane in her efforts, but the four soon finds themselves in conflict with Carnage, which ultimately jogs Mary Jane's memory. Carnage, also stricken with amnesia, recovers his memory at the same time.

Before Carnage can strike down Mary Jane, Spider-Man swoops in and quickly defeats him. Spider-Man then takes off his mask and reveals his secret identity to a shocked Mary Jane, and the reunited couple share a kiss. However, Carnage reappears and snatches away Spidey's beau.

Despite efforts from Jameson, Thompson, Beck and Osborn, Carnage eventually takes Mary Jane to the top of the Tower Bridge, where he plans to throw her to her watery doom. Spider-Man is unable to stop Carnage from throwing her over the edge, but Osborn manages to save her at the last minute. Spider-Man chases Carnage to Big Ben, where he's able to use the sound of the bell ringing to separate the Carnage symbiote from its host. However, both the symbiote and its host, Cletus Kasady, get away.

Spider-Man and Mary Jane return to Madame Web, finally ready to return home with the chair now fixed by Wells. Before they can head off, Carnage reappears and takes Mary Jane, threatening to kill her. Carnage tries to use the chair, but a safeguard only allowing Madame Web to use the chair rips Carnage apart and sends him in pieces to limbo.

Before heading to their home dimension, Madame Web takes Spider-Man and Mary Jane to "No Place", where she shows him Spider-People (including Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen) from alternate dimensions. There, she tells Peter about the importance of being Spider-Man and reminds him, "With great power comes great responsibility." Spider-Man and Mary Jane return to their home dimension (Earth-92131) to finally start their life together.

Reflecting on his adventures while web-slinging through New York, he visits Bruce the Gargoyle and says he finally accepts who he is, The Amazing Spider-Man!

To reiterate, "Peter Finds Mary Jane" should not be considered canon with Spider-Man: The Animated Series. It's more akin to Semper's hypothetical/possible approach to a modern-day special wrapping up the series. Essentially, it's a "What If...?" It is not canon.

But just to note, an episode similar to "Peter Finds Mary Jane" was planned to be the first episode of a sixth potential season. However, Spider-Man: The Animated Series was not renewed after season five.
