Interview with Static Shock "The Big Leagues" Director Dave Chlystek
by Jim Harvey

Toon Zone was able to catch up with Dave Chlystek again about the much anticipated "The Big Leagues" Static Shock episode, as well as the future of the critically acclaimed Kids'WB! series.

Was it a challenge to have two iconic characters brought onto Static Shock?

Yes. It was a challenge in the sense that Static as a television series is not Batman the Animated Series. It is by nature a much lighter show, both in the stories and in the aesthetics. Tristin Roesch, who is the lead color designer for the show came up with a really great combination of the background colors of both shows. It blew me away when I saw how wonderful everything looked on the screen. She should get alot of credit and recognition for how talented she is! Her job is not an easy one, even though she makes it look that way. The challenge was to stay true to both shows and characters, and my amazing crew of storyboard people, Pat McEown, and Eddie Lin did a great job. I was very fortunate to have such amazing artists at my disposal. The Producer of the series, who doesn't get nearly enough credit is Scott Jeralds, his input was invaluable. And Scott is one of those rare producers who is confident enough in the people he brings to do the job that he is very hands off unless you need him, (and invariably, we always do) then he is there with great suggestions. We were very fortunate to have such a good person heading things up. And Alan Burnett, well, is just one of the truly great individuals in our industry. I felt extremely confident about the episode knowing that Alan would definitely reign us in if we strayed too far from either character. I really admire the man. My hope is that the fans who are jaded will watch this episode and be impressed. The show really is about how we would react if we came face to face with Batman. So there are a lot of iconic moments in the show. I couldn't be happier with it.

How did the idea for the episode team up arise?

The network suggested it.

Is this the first of many team ups for Static Shock, perhaps?

Unfortunately, this is the only superhero team up on line for this season. Perhaps if the show is picked up for a third season, that would be a strong possibility. It would great to team Static up with other characters from the DC Universe.

How do you envision the future for the Static Shock TV program?

It all depends on the ratings, my friend. Personally, I think the show would work very well as a springboard for other team ups with DC characters as well as introducing other Milestone universe characters. This episode was a blast to do, and would be fun to do it with other characters. In closing, I would like to say that in my opinion, this season blows away the first season of Static. We have some really wonderful episodes coming up. But then, I'm biased.
