DC Showcase - The Losers Mini-Review
By James Harvey

Head back to World War II with DC Showcase - The Losers, which tosses viewers right into the thick of things and doesn't let up until the final moments. While those new to the famed DC Comics team might be little lost, overall the DC Showcase short does a fine job providing an engaging story that offers up a surprise or two for good measure.

Directed by Milo Neuman from a script by Tim Sheridan, DC Showcase - The Losers finds the team - Captain Storm, Johnny Cloud, "Mile-a-Minute" Jones, Gunner and Sarge - marooned on an uncharted island in the South Pacific overrun with dinosaurs! Joining them on their mission is the mysterious Fan Long, who needs The Losers' help to save a group of scientists. Voicing the rat-tag heroes are Dean Winters as Captain Storm, Dave B. Mitchell as Gunner & Sarge, Eugene Byrd as Mile-a-Minute Jones, Martin Sensmeier as Johnny Cloud, and Ming-Na Wen as Fan.

For long-times fans of The Losers, this DC Showcase short is an enjoyable reminder of what makes this group of characters so compelling. Surviving against incredible odds and uncovering mysteries is what this group tends to do best, and you get both of those here, and it's all handled respectfully by the short's creative team (and sold by fantastic crew performances). However, this short will likely confuse the more casual DC Comics fan as, well, crucial details on who and what The Loser do can be pretty sparse on occasion, leaving the short with an overlying haziness. Couple that with the surprisingly weak animation and it's easy to see why this short might not be the favorite for some.

While those new to The Losers should still check it out, DC Showcase - The Losers definitely plays better to the long-time fans than the more casual viewers. While plot details are occasionally lacking, the story is still easy to figure out and follow, plus the characters and the odd twist help things along immensely. And there's a couple great action beats to be had here, including a gripping opener which throws us right into the action! There's a lot to like about this short, but it'll definitely play better to the long-timers. Recommended, but with reservations.
