Batman: Gotham by Gaslight Blu-Ray Review
by James Harvey

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is releasing Batman: Gotham by Gaslight to Blu-ray 4K Blu-ray and DVD, offering fans the chance to own the film on their preferred format. If you have the capabilities, the 4K option is likely the smartest choice, but the Blu-ray release - both available packed in with the 4K Blu-ray or as its own Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack - isn't anything to scoff at either.

The film looks sharp in HD, with the 4K Blu-ray release offering the film at its best. The film appears crisper, with the colors appearing bountiful and the blacks deep. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight appears clean - free to any artifacts or image problems, like macroblocking - and undoubtedly representing the film at its finest form. The colors really do benefit for the 4K Ultra edition, and seem to actually enhance the film's attributes. Need an example? Just watch the film's climactic, fiery finale. That said, the regular Blu-ray image is solid quality too, with minimal colorbanding, but nothing distracting to the eye. The DTS-HD MA track is clear and clean throughout, with explosive moments and action beats carrying the necessary heft to really give your home stereo system a fair shake. It's a robust track, plain and simple, something that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has consistently delivered on with these titles. Please note the 4K Blu-ray release features the same audio tracks as the regular Blu-ray.

Moving on to the bonus content, housed on the included 4K disc, the studio offers up the usual extras with a handful of bonus surprises. The key bonus feature is the "Caped Fear: The First Elseworld," a roughly 20-minute look at the Elseworlds comic line that was birthed from Gotham by Gaslight and how the creative team worked to bring that title to animated form. The featurette works in tandem nicely to the audio commentary, which features producers Bruce Timm and Sam Liu with writer Jim Krieg. The audio commentary included some legitimate insight into the production of the film, what worked in the script, discuss changes between the source material and the animated movie and the motivation for said changes, along with a hefty helping of neat tidbits. It's an entertaining track, and likely the highlight for many fans picking up this title.

For additional content, the Batman: Gotham by Gaslight Blu-ray also included a preview of the forthcoming Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay animated feature, which offers a nice mix of brief interviews, production work and finished animation, all housed in a kinda nifty, faux grindhouse presentation. It looks like it's going to earn that R-rating... Also included are sneak peeks at Justice League Dark and Batman: Bad Blood, trailers, and two bonus episodes. The bonus episodes - Batman: The Brave and the Bold "Trials of the Demon!" and Batman: The Animated Series "Showdown" are both presented in standard definition.

The 4K Blu-ray release also included a regular Blu-ray copy and digital copy of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight.

It's worth noting that there will be some notable retail exclusive releases for Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, including a copy of the original Gotham by Gaslight story packaged with the Blu-ray release of the film. Check with your local retailers to see if they have any exclusive goodies they'll be adding for the animated title's physical release.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is a fantastic animated feature and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has given the film a respectable home media release. For fans who prefer to purchase physical media, The 4K Blu-ray edition of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is undeniably the way to go. The uptick in quality between the 4K Ultra and regular Blu-ray is noticeable, with the 4K Ultra release actually adding a little more depth to the film's presentation. For the undiscerning eye, choosing between either edition likely won't make a difference, but for those who care about presentation, you know which one to pick up! The bonus content included here compliments the main feature nicely and actually provide interesting anecdotes on the process of adapting a story from one medium to the next. Easily one of the strongest titles in the DC Universe Movie line, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is well worth adding to your collection. Must Own!
