“Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part Two” Moves Over 165,000 Total Units In First Week

According to various home media retailing outlets and independent research, the recent Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part Two direct-to-video animated feature has moved an estimated 167,000 units in its first week – the weekend ending February 3rd, 2013, with 62,000 of those sales coming from DVD and 105,000 from the Blu-ray format. The latest film in the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line, currently available to own on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, Download, and onDemand, is the second in a two-part adaptation of the acclaimed 1980s comic series The Dark Knight Returns starring a retired Batman who dons the cape and cowl to deal with a city decaying into crime.

To compare, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One moved an estimated 157,500 units in its first week – the weekend ending September 30th, 2012, with 60,500 of those sales coming from DVD and 97,000 from the Blu-ray format. The previous DC Universe Animated Original Movie has been a consistent seller since its release, having sold over 300,000 units in combined Blu-ray and DVD sales.

Blu-ray sales have accounted for an estimated 71% of total Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One home video sales since its first week, with the high-definition format easily the dominant media. Keep in mind the sales numbers above do not take into account rental numbers, OnDemand numbers, or legal download numbers. Additionally, please note that the Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One Two-Disc Special Edition DVD release did not go wide until March 16th, 2013.

A source at Warner Home Video indicates that a possible Batman: The Dark Knight Returns special edition release, combining both parts of the animated feature together, will likely happen soon.

Year-End 2012 Sales For “DC Universe Animated Original Movie” Animated Titles

Debuting three new feature-length titles in 2012, the DC Universe Animated Original Movie direct-to-video line from Warner Home Video moved nearly 1.1 million home video units during the calendar year. The above number comes from the three DC Universe Animated Original Movie titles that debuted this year – Justice League: Doom, Superman Versus The Elite and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part Two – and those numbers are expected to see some growth, though likely slight, during the 2012 holiday season. Note that all numbers listed in this articles are estimated numbers only, based on research and market analysis.

Among the three new DC Universe Animated Original Movie titles, the February 2012 Justice League: Doom animated feature has moved the most units since its release date, predictably so given it’s early in-the-year release date, moving an estimated 615,000 units combined in the DVD and Blu-ray formats since hitting shelves. The title benefited from strong word-of-mouth throughout the year, along with multiple award nominations and recognition for the work of the late Dwayne McDuffie, who penned the feature. The direct-to-video Justice League: Doom animated feature debuted to 265,000 home video units copies sold in its first week of sales, the week ending March 5th, 2012.

The second feature-length DC Universe Animated Original Movie title of the year, released Summer 2012, the direct-to-video Superman Versus The Elite animated feature has moved 206,000 units in both the DVD and Blu-ray format since its debut. The title was easily the lowest profile release in the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line for 2012, barely selling over 130,000 units combined in its first frame, the week ending June 17th, 2012. Criticism of the film’s design work resulted in negative word-of-mouth for the feature, something it was unable to overcome.

Lastly, the final 2012 release under the DC Universe Animated Original Movie banner, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One has proven to be a solid seller on the home video market. The title moved 210,000 total DVD and Blu-ray units in its first week, and over 260,000 to date. The majority of sales, over 70%, came from the Blu-ray format. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One is expected to finish out the year with consistent sales thanks to the home video release of the theatrical feature The Dark Knight Rises, as well as the anticipation for the January 2013 release of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part Two.

November 2012 Sales Estimates For “Young Justice,” “Green Lantern: The Animated Series” Comics

Sales estimates for the November 2012-shipping issues of the Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series comic titles are now available. The sales numbers below are estimates based on the information provided by Diamond Comics Distributors made available earlier this month.

Green Lantern: The Animated Series #8 moved an estimated 5,961 copies to North American comic book stores during the month of November 2012. The comic title has experiencing a steady erosion of sales since its debut earlier this year, a normal occurrence for any comic title, but has now started to slip below its level of an estimated 6,000 sales per month. Sales for Green Lantern: The Animated Series #0 – the special preview issue of the title – hit 13,600 when it first debuted.

The November 2012 issue of Young Justice, issue #22, sold an estimated 7,344 copies to comic shops in North America. The title has been experiencing a slow growth in sales from month to month for the past year, but experienced a drop of roughly 200 ordered issues between October 2012 and November 2012. The decline in sales is likely attributed to the announcement of the title’s end with issue #25. Please note these numbers do not take into account copies appearing on newsstands or sold digitally.

“Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One” Moves Nearly 250,000 Total Units In Home Video Sales

According to various home media retailing outlets and independent research, the recent Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One direct-to-video animated feature has moved close to 250,000 units on home video in combined DVD and Blu-ray sales in its first month of release. The latest DC Universe Animated Original Movie title moved an estimated 157,500 units in its first week – the weekend ending September 30th, 2012, with 60,500 of those sales coming from DVD and 97,000 from the Blu-ray format. During the remainder of the month, the title managed to garner nearly 100,000 additional units sold, bringing its current cumulative total to an estimated 248,500 copies of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One. Sales numbers are up to the end of October 2012. While currently unconfirmed, it is likely the title is now over 250,000 in estimated sales.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One is expected to maintain strong sales for the remainder of the year, partly due to the upcoming marketing efforts for the home video release of the The Dark Knight Rises theatrical feature and the January 2013 home video release of the Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part Two animated movie. Reports cite that some retail outlets have included copies of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One alongside copies of The Dark Knight Rises in special promotional standees and displays.

October 2012 Sales Estimates For “Young Justice,” “Green Lantern: The Animated Series” Comics

Sales estimates for the October 2012-shipping issues of the Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series comic titles are now available. The sales numbers below are estimates based on the information provided by Diamond Comics Distributors made available earlier this month.

Green Lantern: The Animated Series #6 moved an estimated 6,515 copies to North American comic book stores during the month of October 2012. The comic title has experiencing a steady erosion of sales since its debut earlier this year, a normal occurrence for any comic title, but has now started to reach it’s level of an estimated 6,500 sales per month. Sales for Green Lantern: The Animated Series #0 – the special preview issue of the title – hit 13,600 when it first debuted.

The October 2012 issue of Young Justice, issue #21, sold an estimated 7,557 copies to comic shops in North America. The title has been experiencing a slow growth in sales from month to month for the past year, usually an addition 1% jump per issue, though the switch to the second season Young Justice: Invasion era of the animated series with issue #20 has resulted in a bigger 5% jump in comic sales. The comic experienced a small jump in sales between issue #20 and #21, of 0.5%. Please note these numbers do not take into account copies appearing on newsstands or sold digitally.

DC Comics has recently announced the cancellation of the Young Justice comic series with issue #25, hitting shelves February 2013.
