Attempting to take over Apokolips with his prisoners in the X-Pit, Virman Vundabar captured Kalibak and tried his hand at brainwashing him. Despite his best efforts (including chocolate cake), Virman was unsuccessful. On top of Kalibak’s will being too strong, Flash, Mr. Miracle and Big Barda freed him for Granny Goodness in exchange for Oberon.
Setting the X-Pit on self-destruct, Virman got away before it exploded.
