A light-hearted love letter to the legend of the world’s greatest detective, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight masterfully mashes a myriad of Batman’s assorted memorable media exploits into one massive, mirth-filled adventure. Whatever one’s favorite iteration of the Caped Crusader may be, chances are it’s playfully recreated here. A joyful jaunt for fans of all ages, though definitely written with adults in mind, TT Games has crafted not only arguably their finest LEGO video game to date, but they’ve also created an absolutely unforgettable trip to Gotham City.
Developed by TT Games, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is an open-world action-adventure game that follows Bruce Wayne’s journey from traumatized orphan to Gotham City’s greatest hero. Inspired by decades of Batman films, television series, animated shows, comic books, and video games, this game brilliantly blends iconic moments from across the Dark Knight’s history with DC Comics deep cuts and LEGO’s trademark humor. But what sets this game apart is, rather than choosing a single version of Batman to focus on, it instead weaves together a host of different eras of the Dark Knight into a single original story that serves as a sincere and hilarious tribute to his enduring legacy.
Boasting impressive size and scope, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight celebrates both the best and weirdest aspects of the iconic hero, fearlessly embracing Batman’s eclectic history and making it all coexist with surprising ease. TT Games’ bold decision to draw from nearly every corner of the character’s pop-culture footprint pays off remarkably well, resulting in a unique and unbelievably fun experience. With an incredible amount to see, do, and unlock, there’s no shortage of content to keep players engaged long after the campaign ends.
Part of the reason this game works so well, save for a couple missteps, is more than anything else, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight feels and looks like a game built by a team utterly obsessed with Batman. Here we have a game where references to Batman: The Animated Series, Batman ’66, The Dark Knight, one-shot foes, forgotten side characters, comic runs from decades ago, and more, all comfortably exist side-by-side, and usually referenced mere moments apart from each other. Even Gotham City itself feels constructed directly from Batman’s varied history, with key locations, visual callbacks or winks from the character’s history cobbled together into a gorgeous, sprawling cityscape.

Not only is the sheer volume of nods impressive, but it’s especially exceptional how seamlessly TT Games is able to blend all them together. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight constantly shifts between inspirations, remixing and reworking iconic moments into a surprisingly cohesive narrative. It never feels like a straight adaptation or a “greatest hits” compilation, but instead like Batman’s media history has been disassembled and rebuilt into an original story (and if you pay attention, you’ll notice some notable changes to established lore).
Speaking of size, the Gotham City in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a massive playground jammed-full with surprises around nearly every corner. The city feels gigantic, dense and teaming with life as citizens litter the sidewalks as cars drive fill the road and businesses bustle. There’s plenty in there to do, too, and thankfully Gotham City is overflowing with character, allowing the iconic locale to feel more than just an open-world map filled with icons.
It also helps that the traversal is pretty fantastic, too. Whether it’s gliding through the sky, grappling across rooftops, or driving down busy streets, it’s a breeze to get around town. In fact, driving feels much smoother in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight when compared to the clunky mechanics in Batman: Arkham Knight. It never gets old, moving through Gotham City, and it’s hard to believe at times that this is a Lego game. The city looks and feels just that good.
It’s clear that TT Games borrows pretty liberally from the Batman: Arkham series, and it’s that much more apparent when it comes to the game’s combat system. The free-flow fisticuffs, built around counters, gadget use and combo chaining, brings a little added flair and challenge in comparison to the previous LEGO Batman titles. It’s a blast watching Batman zipping around, taking down multiple foes while big comic book sound effects burst off the screen.

Unfortunately, the game’s combat also arguably exposes LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight‘s biggest weakness. While satisfying early on, encounters eventually become a little repetitive over extended play sessions as the game’s enemy variety is a little limited and several boss fights are pretty simple situations to squash. Stealth and Detective Mode are also pretty basic, doing the near-minimum, but ultimately serviceable.
The so-so scuffling is a bit of a letdown, definitely, but the content-rich game’s staggering scope lessens any of its shortcomings. Few superhero games have embraced the full scope of Batman’s history as enthusiastically as LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, as it’s absolutely stacked with costume variants, references, homages, easter eggs, nods, and so on, are mesmerizing. Plus it’s always a treat stumbling across obscure references that longtime fans would never expect to see in a mainstream game.
That said, there’s a few glaring omissions for a game designed to celebrate the vast legacy of one of the world’s most enduring pop-culture icons. The absence of long-established characters such as Tim Drake, Red Hood and Cassandra Cain as playable heroes is especially noticeable, though somewhat understandable given the direction of the campaign’s story, and the lack of certain expected costume variants, such as designs from Beware the Batman, and a limited vehicle roster will likely disappoint some. It’s somewhat of a weird testament to this game that it’s easier to notice what’s not here than what is since it’s just so jam-packed with material.
Along those same lines, the Bat-Cave is great but appears scaled back and not as customizable as expected. It’s still impressive and chock-full with interactive elements, with some cool goodies to uncover, but it feels a little creatively boxed-in. None of this ruins the game in the slightest, but will likely prompt players to wonder what was left on the cutting room floor.
Still, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight offers a pretty stable gameplay experience, arguably the result of the developers making some of the previously mentioned concessions, though not flawless. Minor physics glitches, occasional camera issues, and small visual hiccups appear throughout the adventure, but nothing that impacts playability. Given the amount of time players will likely put into the game, it won’t be surprising to encounter the occasional weird issue.
With how much content the game holds, it’s safe to say players will spend a long time on the streets of Gotham City. Side missions, puzzles, collectibles, races, villain encounters, challenge rooms, hidden references, and environmental storytelling can easily add hours of play beyond the main campaign. TT Games has created an attractive, enjoyable and inviting world for both newbies and long-timers to pick apart in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

In addition to its gameplay and graphics, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight features an excellent score by Simon Withenshaw and strong voice work from its cast. The performances are consistently solid, and the banter is often genuinely hilarious, even if the portrayal of the game’s titular hero leaves a little something to be desired. Shai Matheson’s take on Batman isn’t as gruff as many would expect for the character, but it ultimately fits the game’s lighter tone quite well.
Even with the odd shortcoming, it’s impressive what TT Games has accomplished here. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight remembers The Caped Crusader’s appeal is not tied to one tone, one actor, one era, or one interpretation, but he’s instead survived for generations precisely because he can evolve while still remaining unmistakably Batman. And this game embraces pretty much all of it.
Batman’s massive media mythology is packaged here in one gigantic, affectionate adventure. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight may not be perfect, as the fighting can wear thin and certain omissions sting, but when the game soars, those issues fade away. A lovingly crafted journey through the Caped Crusader’s varied ventures, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight isn’t just another Batman game, but a joyous celebration of Batman himself! Must Play!
