EPISODES - "MONSTERS"

Beware The Batman
#17 - Monsters

Original Airdate - September 6th, 2014
There's a new hero in Old Gotham. A Golem creature has been fighting back against armored criminals attacking local businesses. Tracking the creature down to an abandoned synagogue, Batman and Katana discover that the "Golem" is actually Rex Mason (aka Metamorpho), who's been retraining his body in order to help the citizens of Old Gotham. Realizing he's found a new ally, Batman joins Metamorpho's fight, but it isn't easy. The criminals are using high-tech weaponry... from Stagg Industries!

Very nice staging that the episode starts and ends at the Gotham Arms. It was an interesting bit of city building. Back in "Attraction", a news ticker was "Mayor Grange approves construction of luxury apartments in Old Gotham" So it was set up back then. And Batman follows up on that in the second Batcave scene. And Crime Alley. What a powerful scene. Didn't expect this Batman to just freeze up. The "No!" with Ruivivar's voice instead of Marsden was a nice touch. I like how it was just there with no connection but it was nice to see the Monarch Theater with a Mark of Zorro marquee then between it and the diner from earlier is Crime Alley.

Great to see the return of Metamorpho. While the staging is cliche, I appreciated they played up the mystery of who the vigilante was and utilize Batman's analytical skills once again. Interesting someone as powerful as Simon is still imprisoned at Blackgate after all these months. Loved Katana trying to come up with a codename. Metamorpho had some cool moves in this episode like flying into the car's gas and igniting it. Also, Outsiders reference.

All in all, it was awesome seeing Batman and Katana work in tandem briefly. Batman "pulls a Bane" and attacks the wires connected to the Battle Suit Leader then Katana comes in and disables the legs. And the reporter, Veronica Fisher, crediting Batman "and his allies" was the cherry on top.

Interesting Anarky popped up at the end with his proposition and manipulating Dent some more. Loved the imagery of Dent spinning like a coin flip and the contrast of his half of his face in the light and the shadows of the office. Subtle but obvious foreshadowing. Not sure what to make of this Captain Dane Lisslow character. Just there. But as for Sapphire Stagg, interesting approach to make this version more villainous whereas she's the opposite in the comics. Also liked how they didn't just dew it up at the end and Batman arrested Sapphire or he recorded the conversation and incriminated her. It's a more realistic end to the main story compared to similar scenes in past shows.

Nice to get a few more non-Gotham references as well. In the opening scene, one of the thugs tells the Bodega owner Metropolis is a nice place to retire to. Metropolis was also mentioned in the first issue of the tie-in comic. And in the news ticker, continuing with another reference to this location - one of the headlines is "War in Kahndaq continues to rage as oil prices skyrocket."
