EPISODES - "UNIQUE"

Beware The Batman
#21 - Unique

Original Airdate - September 27th, 2014
Clones have begun showing up in Gotham… and they're after Ava Kirk (Tisha T. Banker), an old friend of Bruce Wayne's. Ava's father, Paul Kirk died years before in a hunting accident. Or did he? As it turns out, Paul Kirk (Xander Berkeley) is not only alive, but hasn't aged a bit. The victim of an experiment by a nefarious organization known as The Council, Kirk was cloned to create an army of super soldiers. But now, Paul Kirk (codenamed Manhunter) has escaped...and The Council wants him back.

Decent episode, but I guess I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I was more familiar with the Manhunter character and his comic book history. Still, this was a pretty good story and had some neat action scenes. It served as both a good mystery for Batman to solve and a cool little team-up with a lesser-known comic book character. I have to admit, though ... when I hear "Manhunter," I think of Green Lantern: The Animated Series.

Moving on, I liked the connection between the Waynes and the Kirks and how it opened up a potential love interest for Bruce. It's always nice to see new aspects of Brcue Wayne's past explored, and this is actually a nice, novel take on the whole thing.

The Manhunter clones were pretty nifty, providing nice fodder for the action scenes but little else. The mysterious Council and Dr. Mykros actually drew my attention, and I'd love to see them explored again down the road. All these characters are new to me and I'd like to learn more. The final battle on the bridge was impressive and well-staged, and it was especially nice to see everyone given at least one good moment to shine. The ending was particularly nice and pretty surprisingly upbeat. Kudos to the Beware The Batman crew for giving our characters a little hope.

Even though it felt a little bit like a filler episode, I still really enjoyed "Unique." Bringing in Manhunter and introducing Ava made for a couple nice additions to the show, but not much else happened - nothing that really pushed the overall story ahead. Still entertaining stuff, though.
