Beware The Batman
#22 – Hero

Original Airdate – September 27th, 2014

Desperate to rid the city of Batman, Harvey Dent finds a new ally in Anarky. With Harvey’s blessing, Anarky ups the stakes and recruits a new hero to take Batman’s place – Deathstroke (Robin Atkin Downes). With hired killer Deathstroke around, Gotham no longer needs Batman to protect it. There’s only one problem: Deathstroke is insane and doesn’t care who gets hurt…as long as he kills Batman!

Another excellent episode of Beware the Batman – lots of action, suspense – and even some comedy – made this probably the best episode yet. Obviously the highlight was the introduction of Deathstroke. He’s introduced as a more heroic character here than in previous incarnations, though looks can be deceiving, and by the end of the episode you see what he’s really capable of. Not surprising, especially to those who know his comic book roots, but it was still a great revelation nonetheless. I imagine, if the series adapts his iconic look, we won’t be seeing him with two eyes for much longer. His fight scenes were pretty impressive and I liked how he was first seen as Dent’s man (another neat twist this show tosses in to keep everyone on their toes).

Deathstroke versus Batman was pretty amazing, and most likely the first of many awesome fights to come. Deathstroke’s double-cross wasn’t all that surprising to me, but it was still handled pretty well. The climax of the battle between Batman and Deathstroke was excellent – some nice choreography and an unexpected final move by Deathstroke, though I doubt this’ll be the last we see of him. How Harvey Dent and Anarky’s plans factor into this also have me intrigued.

I thought the show introduced some much-needed levity, such as Tatsu’s date with Dane. Bruce and Ava’s commentary was also pretty humourous, too. I’m interested to see where the relationship with Ava (introduced in “Unique”) and Bruce goes … we know Batman’s relationships never end well. All in all, an excellent episode.
