Rich Fogel Talks "Legends"
By Jim Harvey
04-18-2002

Sunday will see the premiere of the new Justice League episode "Legends Part 1". Toon Zone was able to talk to Rich Fogel about the much anticipated episode.

"This should be a fun one. "Legends" is a loving tribute to those larger than life, all in color for a dime, Golden Age superheroes." said Rich Fogel. "This was a story that Bruce Timm and James Tucker discussed on a long flight back from Korea, and I loved the idea. Andrew Kreisberg's wonderful script captures all the loopy logic of the old comics, including the Earth II concept."

It is no secret that the process to get this story to screen was a difficult one. The creative crew met with some resistance from DC Comics about using the Justice Society of America moniker.

"Originally we wanted to feature the old Justice Society, but DC had some issues with their use in this particular story. So we compromised and made the Justice Guild of America." said Fogel. " With Bruce's inspired retro designs and the terrific voice casting, I really like the way these new characters turned out. The recording session was a blast, featuring Ted McGinley as Tom Turbine, Stephen Root as Cat-Man, David Naughton as The Streak, William Katt as The Green Guardsman and Jennifer Hale as Black Siren. It would be fun if DC published a mock Justice Guild Annual sometime! In addition to being a rollicking, nostalgic adventure, "Legends" is a thoughtful examination of what inspires true heroism."

Rich Fogel concluded by saying: "So get out your decoder rings and enjoy "Legends"!"
