Rich Fogel Talks 'Justice League: The Savage Time'
By Jim Harvey
11-06-2002

Toon Zone was able to catch up with Rich Fogel, one of the creators behind Justice League, to discuss the much anticipated three part Justice League season finale, "The Savage Time." It will air November 9th, 2002 at 7pm (ET) as a full length movie on Cartoon Network's Cartoon Theatre.

The 'Savage' Soldiers"We initially wanted to do 'The Savage Time' because it gave us an opportunity to put characters like Superman and Wonder Woman back into World War II, the period where they first appeared in print," said Fogel. "We were inspired by those Golden Age covers of Superman tossing tanks and Wonder Woman roping Nazi spies. We also thought this would be a great chance to animate Sgt. Rock & Easy Company and the Blackhawks."

Early reports revealed that "The Savage Time" would focus mainly on one member of the Justice League. That soon changed as the storyline began to develop into something bigger.

Superman and...Batman?"As the story grew, it really took on epic proportions," said Fogel. "Each of our main heroes has an important arc or character moment, and the action is jam-packed. I'm glad Cartoon Network is showing this one as a movie because I think there would be riots if we left fans hanging."

Fans worried about whether or not Koko, the studio that currently animates Justice League, can handle such an epic story need not worry.

The Blackhawks"When we storyboarded the complex aerial action sequences we were really nervous about whether or not we were over-taxing our overseas animation studios," said Fogel. "We even sent them model airplanes for reference. But they came through with flying colors and exceeded our expectations. These sequences are breathtaking. Be sure to listen for the rousing Blackhawk theme music; I was humming it for days afterwards."

A story is only as good as its villain, and Fogel assures us that the villain behind this epic adventure will prove to be a considerable challenge to the League.

Vandal Savage"'The Savage Time' also introduces Vandal Savage as the main villain," said Fogel. "He is voiced by the talented Phil Morris. Savage is such a towering villain we already have plans to bring him back a couple of times in Season Two.

"We are very proud of this episode and think that it ends our first season on a high note," concluded Fogel. "We hope you'll agree."
