Fogel Discusses 'Justice League' Second Season Premiere
By Jim Harvey
02-24-2003

Toon Zone was able to talk to Rich Fogel about not only Justice League's second season, but the actual reasons behind the delayed start. The second season was originally slated to begin in April, but has now been pushed back to October.

"Yeah, we were more than a little surprised when Cartoon Network announced that Season 2 of Justice League won't premiere until October," said Fogel. "Of course, I suppose, nothing in this business should surprise me at this point. They have been nothing but supportive and enthusiastic about the show, and I know they are trying to position it for maximum success."

There has been a lot of speculation as to why the second season of Justice League was pushed back by more than five months. Fogel was able to get a straight answer from Cartoon Network.

"They said that they didn’t want to premiere until they had a complete run of finished episodes," said Fogel. "This way, they can build some momentum by having an uninterrupted run of new shows every week. By avoiding the frustrating stops and starts that we had in the first season, they hope to build a bigger audience."

Even though the premiere date is now months away, that doesn't mean that work has slowed down for the creative team behind Justice League. The show is still in active production, ranging from storyboarding to voice work to post-production.

"For our part, we've been working hard to make Season Two even better than Season One, and from what I've seen, the results are nothing short of spectacular," said Fogel. "So far, we've got eight half hours totally completed, and four more have animation back from overseas and are in post production here. We've got great returning villains like Darkseid, Brainiac, Lex Luthor and Vandal Savage, plus exciting new ones like Amazo and Despero. I don't mean to be torturing you guys, but these shows are awesome!"

At the announcement of a delay a few days ago, the Internet was quickly flooded with rumors regarding reasons for the delay. Rumors ranged from production costs to conflict with the network. Thankfully, none of these rumors are true, or even close to the truth.

"Contrary to rumor, there have not been any significant production delays," said Fogel. " As far as I know, we've been hitting all of our projected delivery dates. But these things do take time. Next week, we are recording the final half hour of Season Two, so it has been a long haul, and I, for one, am looking forward to getting some rest — after I finish plotting out four more Justice League novels (please excuse the unabashed plug!)."

"We are certainly proud of these new episodes and are eager to have the fans see them," said Fogel. "I know the wait has been excruciating, but in the end, we hope you'll agree that it was well worth the wait."
