Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has put together a servicable 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release for the also-serviceable Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, with both not quite living up to expectations. While the visual presentation is another commendable effort, the audio and bonus features don’t quite make the grade. Still, for fans looking to own this movie, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray still comes out on top among this movie’s assorted home media editions.
Taking a peak first at disc’s video transfer, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires‘ 2K presentation looks sharp on Ultra HD. The colors are vivid and bold, and blacks are pretty deep, nicely bringing Aztec Batman’s world to life. There’s no banding, macroblocking or any type of noticable compression issues of the sort, making for a distraction-free presentation. It’s not a mind-blowing transfer, but it more than does the job and surpasses the Blu-ray, digital and DVD iterations.
Switching to audio and it’s a mixed bag. The film’s English dub is the disc’s default option, and comes with a lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix. The audio track is center-focused but makes good use of its assorted channels, ensuring the action scnees hit nice and hard and sound as full as can be. However, the film’s original Spanish track is only given a disappointing Dolby Digital 5.1 track mix. The lossy track does a fine enough job, but it’s frustrsting and bewildering that it’s not lossless given that Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires was primarily produced by and for a Spanish-speaking audience.
The baffling decisions continue when it comes to the disc’s special features, with the two included featurettes clocking in at just a hair over ten minutes. First up is “The Battle Cry of Aztec Batman,” which runs 3:45 minutes and focuses on English dub voice actor Jay Hernandez, who talks about working on the project and what attracted him to the role. Voice director Wes Gleason also briefly chimes in on Aztec Batman and that’s basically it. There’s no mention or discussion of recording the Spanish language track.
The other featurette is “The Batman Mythology and Aztec Inspiration,” which clocks in at 6:25 minutes and takes a broader look at Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires. The featurette looks at adapting Batman’s origin to 16th century Mesoamerica, with quick interviews with Hernandez and writer Ernie Altbacker, who also talks about working with director Juan Meza-León and historians when creating the film’s story. It’s a fluff piece but there’s still a few interesting tidbits.
The Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray also includes a code for a digital copy of the film and that’s it. Like with this year’s Batman Ninja va. Yakuza League, there’s not even a slipcase. Considering the other editions of the film available to purchase, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray does comparitively provide the superior overall presentation of this clash of empires.
Packed with some pretty cool ideas, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires makes for an interesting watch even if the efforts of the film’s creators fall short. Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment’s 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the film is a similar fumble, with a solid video presentation mired by a lossy Spanish audio track and exceptionally slim bonus extras. Still, for those interested in checking out this spin on the Dark Knight, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition is the way to go. Enter at Your Own Risk!

Please note a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray copy of Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires was provided by Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment for the purpose of this review. The author also purchased an iTunes edition of the film for comparison and completion purposes.
