Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review
By James Harvey

The first animated adventure of the Super Sons arrives on physical and digital media, courtesy of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, and it’s a pretty good overall release. The studio offers up reliably strong audio and video transfers for Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons, plus a small batch of extras, including a featurette and extra episodes, to wrap things up. It’s not a lot, but what’s here is worth watching.

Taking a look at the audio and visual quality of Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons and, again, the studio puts in commendable work. The 4K 2160p transfer shines, with colors popping off the screen and details as clear as can be. Blacks look deep and colors vivid, and the presentation is a noticeable step up from the regular included Blu-ray disc, with virtually no banding or compression visible.

The audio here follows suit, thanks to a robust and crisp DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix. As expected, dialogue sounds great and action scenes are full and boisterous. As with the video, it’s a near-perfect presentation.

The bonus features for Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons may leave a little to be desired, though. First up is the “Rival Sons: Jonathan and Damian” featurette, a short behind-the-scenes look at the characters and movie. Running shy of 15 minutes, the featurette looks at the characters’ comic history and film development, and features soundbites from producers Rick Morales and Jim Krieg (or, hilariously, “Jim-El” here), director Matt Peters, and writer Jeremy Adams, among others. It’s not a deep dive into the movie and characters, but it’s still good content with some interesting observations to check out.

Also included are two episodes “from the DC Vault,” this time from Batman: The Animated Series. The episodes, “The Demon’s Quest, Part One” and “The Demon’s Quest, Part Two,” are presented in 1080p with 2.0 lossy audio. These are two great episodes, but their inclusion here is a little baffling. Why not some team-up adventures from Superman: The Animated Series?

The set is rounded out with some trailers and both Blu-ray and digital copies of Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons.

While the included bonus content doesn’t hit the same heights as the main feature, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s release for Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons is still a satisfying product. The movie itself is pretty excellent, and alone justifies the purchase price, but the extra features we get here, while minimal, are still good. And for viewers looking to watch Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons in the best possible format, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release remains the superior format, but the physical Blu-ray release makes for a suitable alternative. Anchored by a fantastic movie, coupled with a small batch of special features, Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons comes as Highly Recommended!
