Three-time Emmy Award winner Bryan Cranston flips to the other side of the law as the voice of Lt. James Gordon for the animated retelling of Frank Millers landmark comic in Batman: Year One, the next entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies.
Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, the all-new, PG-13 rated Batman: Year One arrives today October 18, 2011 from Warner Home Video as a Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD, On Demand and for Download.
Cranston earned Emmy Award nominations in three of his seven years as the lovable, goofy father on Malcolm in the Middle. It took a shift toward the dark side as chemistry teacher-turned-meth dealer Walter White in AMCs Breaking Bad to start a record-tying run as only the second actor in history to score three consecutive Emmy wins.
As Lt. Gordon, Cranston gets to find a middle ground between his two best known roles providing a moral center for the gritty tale of two men striving to bring their own idea of justice to an unjust world.
Cranston is joined in the stellar voice cast by Ben McKenzie (Southland, The O.C.) as Batman, Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) as Detective Sarah Essen. Alex Rocco (The Godfather) is the voice of crime lord Carmine Falcone.
Following his initial recording session for Batman: Year One, Cranston had the chance to discuss his thoughts on initially turning down the role of Jim Gordon, his love of the inner monologue, the inward journey afforded by comic books, his chances of one-day playing a certain Edwrd Nygma opposite a live-action Dark Knight, and much more. QUESTION: You were Warner Bros. first choice for the role of Jim Gordon, but the feeling wasnt mutual you initially declined. What made you change your mind?
BRYAN CRANSTON: I always talk about the writing Ive gotten to a point in my career where I dont want to just take a job, I want to be part of great storytelling. I always say that I dont care if its a childrens play, Ill do it so long as its great writing. Ive done some animation work and, quite frankly, I havent loved all of it. So when they first offered this to me, I turned it down. I didnt want to do something that I just assumed was goofy or cartoony.
Fortunately, my representatives convinced me that I needed to give this material a fair shake and Im so glad they did. I had no idea that animation could have such depth and sophistication. This is adult storytelling, handled in intrinsically adult ways. Its interesting and thoughtful and dark and nothing that I thought Id find in an animated script.
Jim Gordon is trying to find his moral center. He keeps getting shot down. He doesnt want to work in this hellhole of a city, hated by his fellow cops, hated by his superiors. His wife is pregnant and hes conflicted about bringing a child into this troubled world. Hes on an island. I was really surprised in a good way. This script was well-written, unpredictable, good storytelling. And so I happily ate my hat because Im so glad they forced me to read it.
QUESTION: The name in the film’s title is Batman, but this is just as much Jim Gordon’s story, isn’t it?
BRYAN CRANSTON: What I was first attracted to in reading Batman: Year One was that James Gordon actually is the star. That’s the way I look at it, anyway. That was really unexpected, especially the way hes portrayed. My first experience with Batman was through the comics, but the Batman television series really had an impact. So I thought, Oh, Gordons an old Irishman with that big, thick over-the-top brogue. But there was no comic book silliness there were twists and turns, darkness and light, and truly human mistakes that Id never anticipated. And its as much Jim Gordons story as it is a story about Batmans origins.
QUESTION: So is this your chance to finally put that education in police work to use?
BRYAN CRANSTON:(laughs) In thinking about James Gordon, basically I used my own background. I went to college to become a police officer. There’s a certain similar decorum that all police officers have its a skepticism and a curiosity and a bit of cynicism, too. And what I found in reading the script was that all those elements seem to be in place for the character. So all I wanted to do is to bring out that sensibility and make him real. He has to be a real guy, someone you believe could be this police officer, in order for you to accept the plight and the dismay that he’s going through, and trying to do the right thing in a city that is surrounded by corruption.
QUESTION: So all that time on Malcolm In The Middle, playing that great dad, you really were just waiting for some truly dark roles to present themselves?
BRYAN CRANSTON: Malcolm In The Middle was a great seven years. We had a great time. And I think what made that story work is that at the core you had a real family that was striving to do the right thing. And when you look at what Gordon is to Batman: Year One, he is a guy who’s still striving to do the right thing. Anytime you have that, an audience will even allow you to do the wrong thing if they know that you’re trying to do the right thing. So they’ve got you. It’s like they know that, at the core, you’re a good person, and that’s what he is. So when an issue comes up that forces him to walk a fine line between what is right and what is wrong, and certain things pull him in one direction or the other, the audience empathizes with his struggle. That makes it interesting.
QUESTION: What makes Batman an interesting character to you?
BRYAN CRANSTON: As a character, Batman is someone who has a righteousness about him. And yet, it’s not pure. He is a vigilante. He’s taking matters into his own hands. So you could say that he’s doing good things, but I don’t know that you could say he’s a good guy because of the manner that he approaches his actions. That’s what always makes characters more interesting, that they walk the line of good and bad.
QUESTION: Was there any element of the script that you particularly enjoyed?
BRYAN CRANSTON: I didnt have any particular favorite lines or scenes, but what I really appreciated about doing Lieutenant Gordon was the inner monologue. I don’t remember having (a role) that had that kind of sensibility that allows the character to be honest and open, vulnerable, and let the audience then determine if they’re welcome into this man’s soul or not. So that was probably my favorite part to be able to have that running inner monologue going on, which I find fascinating.
QUESTION: Whats your take on comic books?
BRYAN CRANSTON: To a kid growing up in the ’60s and ’70s, comic books were pretty much one of the only written material that was a diversion for kids. There were three television stations, and movies were few and far between as far as access to them. So you’d get together with your friends and you’d open up comic books when you got tired of playing football in the street, or baseball or whatever. And then you’d allow your imagination to go and to wonder. And the great thing about comic books is that it allows the reader to be his or her own art director. You can see a glimpse of Gotham behind in the tall buildings and you start to imagine the heights of the building, Batman looking down. And when he swoops down, you put that all into your head and fill in the blanks. Sometimes in the comic books, it appeared to me like it was like an impressionistic painting. Where (you thought), What’s that in background? I can’t quite make out what that is, but it feels real. So you fill in the blanks, and that makes it more interesting and like you’re a part of the storytelling itself.
QUESTION: Must you take a different acting approach when playing a real-life individual or a fictional icon as opposed to a character specifically written for the page?
BRYAN CRANSTON: Yes. You approach each character with a little different idea of how and what you need to shape him. I played Buzz Aldrin in From The Earth To The Moon about the Apollo project for HBO, and that I did approach differently. This is a real person, an American hero, a worldwide hero, and he’s still alive. And there’s something in the back of your head that says, I really want him to be proud of this. I want him, above all else, to be able to say that I gave an honest depiction of the sensibility of what was going on then and who I was at that time. I think thats, in a sense, the same when working with an iconic figure like Jim Gordon in Batman: Year One. Everybody has a pretty good idea of Gordon who he is and how he sounds so you can’t go too far against that grain. You need to be in the ballpark. Hes an established character, but the script will give you a good idea of how far you can stretch here or there.
QUESTION: There are a few fan sites spreading a rumor that you’re going be the The Riddler at one point or another in a live-action Batman film. Any truth in these rumors?
BRYAN CRANSTON: I would love to be able to jump into a character like that whole hog and play The Riddler. That would be fun. Although I haven’t been lobbying for that, and there’s a certain part of me that is really fatalistic about (rumors like) that. Its like, if it’s supposed to happen, then it’s supposed to happen. But I can only say that I’d be interested in playing something like that and see how it turns out.

With stunning, stylized CG animation, Green Lantern: The Animated Series takes viewers on a journey of cosmic proportions as Hal Jordan and his band of heroes fight to save the universe. Producer James Tucker Discusses New “Batman: The Brave And The Bold” Episode
The World’s Finest caught up with Batman: The Brave and The Bold Producer James Tucker to discuss the latest episode of the acclaimed animated series, “Bold Beginnings!” The all-new episode debuts tonight, Friday, October 14th, 2011 at 7:00pm (ET) on Cartoon Network. The episode brings together Batman, Aquaman, Green Arrow, and Plastic Man and features a series of flashbacks. The World’s Finest: Right off the bat Space Ghost! How did this teaser come about? Why Space Ghost? Is this the first non-DC Comics character to appear on the series?
James Tucker: The whole idea for having teasers at the beginning of the show came from my love of those Hanna-Barbera superhero shows from the late 1960s that were divided into multiple shorts like Space Ghost, Birdman, Mightor, The Galaxy Trio, and so on. Space Ghost was the best of them and I always had a fondness for the character and he seemed the most on par with our Batman. After our episode with Scooby-Doo, we figured everythings open game for the show.
WF: To the main story. Why were these particular heroes chosen Green Arrow, Plastic Man and Aquaman? Does this tie in with how they were considered regulars during the first season?
JT: This story actually started out as a DTV (direct-to-video movie) script written years ago that was to feature the Batman: The Animated Series-version of Batman in a The Brave and the Bold-type movie featuring three segments consisting of Batman teaming up with Elongated Man, Green Arrow and Zatanna written by Paul Dini and Alan Burnett. Id place it around the time of Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, either right before or right after, I dont recall. For whatever reason the script didnt get produced and it sat on the shelf for years. Fast forward to our third season. We were a bit behind of getting in a finished script for our deadline and had gotten a hold of the script for the aborted DTV. We took two of the segments and adapted them to what became the Green Arrow and Plastic Man (formerly Elongated Man) segments in the episode. Steve Melching wrote the rest of the episode and did a great job of condensing those segments and creating a great framing device using Aquamans thwarted efforts at telling his story. I thought the episode turned out well, especially given considering its convoluted path from a 75 minute DTV to a 22-minute TV show.
WF: As a semi-follow-up to the previous question, are there any other characters you wouldve like to have created a first adventure with Batman story for?
JT: Ive never thought about what other characters Id want to do a first episode with. Obviously Aquaman, Plastic Man and Green Arrow worked out well because they each have a different relationship to Batman and they were also some of the most regular cast members we have on the show. I suppose if we had the time and another season, it would have been fun to show the first meeting with Superman and Wonder Woman. One of the aspects I loved about this show was the liberal use of flashbacks wed use to show the earlier stages of Batmans career, so that would have been fun to do.
WF: Batman: The Brave and The Bold revisits Batmans past a few times over the course of the series. What is the interest in going back to the early days of the Caped Crusaders career? Is there anything you try to avoid doing when looking back?
JT: I may have answered some of this question in the last response, but for me going back into Batmans past was always a way to show earlier versions of Batman that I knew from the comics into one long continuity. Generally, I hate continuity, but I have always had this wish to tie the earliest versions of Batman with the most current Batman because to me its all the same character. I dont fragment the character to prefer one era over another. So yes, our Batman probably did carry a gun in his first adventure, but he also was the one who time traveled and went to different planets and got superpowers and had a 5th Dimension Imp stalk him. Hes also the same Batman who had tiny ears and then impossibly long ears. He was the superhero and he was the detective. Hes all the same character in all those iterations. Its all Batman, so using flashbacks was my way of incorporating these different aspects of Batman into one ‘universe.’
WF: Green Arrow, Plastic Man and Aquaman find themselves in a rather chilly situation, facing off against Mr. Freeze. Why was this villain chosen? Additionally, both Mr. Zero and Mr. Freeze appeared on this series as separate characters, but didnt they end up the same villain (Mr. Freeze) in the comics? Why change that here?
JT: Actually, Mr. Zero and Mr. Freeze are the same character in the series. He just became Mr. Freeze between seasons. I dont believe theres anything that would contradict that in the show but admittedly on a show like this with so many characters to juggle, there are bound to be slips. But we always assumed Mr. Zero became Mr. Freeze. I didnt realize there was any confusion on that point.
WF: There were some particular design choices used in the flashbacks, such as Batmans original costume and a beardless Aquaman. How many designs do characters usually go through before a final one is settled upon, be it in this episode or any episode?
JT: There is no set rule. We were always tweaking designs on this show because we were always trying to up our game all the way up to the end of the series. Sometimes it seems just as we finally think weve figured out the show, its almost over. As for different versions of Batman to use, I just wanted to incorporate all the different versions of the character whenever it was appropriate. As for designs, it takes me a long time to settle on one character design when Im doing the designing. I do a lot of drawing if time allows. Sometimes it only takes a few tries though. I tended to use the actual source material and wanted to draw the characters as close to their original style as possible. So characters like the Shazam family, Doom Patrol, Spectre, etc. were pretty faithful to their original comic book looks. There was no reason to change them.
WF: Lastly, is there anything else you can tell us about ‘Bold Beginnings,’ set to debut tonight on Cartoon Network?
JT: As usual, I think this turned out to be a fun episode that allows the audience to see Batman through the eyes of his closest friends, and was a fun change of pace for our series. Also, you cant go wrong with a Space Ghost teaser!

Eliza Dushku Talks “Batman: Year One” And “Catwoman,” New Images And Videos

Eliza Dushku has taken command of Catwoman and shes not about to give her back.
The star of Dollhouse and Tru Calling, and a vital part of the amazing Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast, provided the voice of Selina Kyle/Catwoman for Batman: Year One, the next entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies. A few short months later, Dushku was quick to accept a return to the role as the title character of the DC Showcase animated short Catwoman.
From the moment she accepted the role, Dushku was keen on making this character her own and coming back to play the character as often as possible. Given her performance, its doubtful casting director Adnrea Romano and executive producer Bruce Timm would look elsewhere the next time the sometimes vigilante, sometimes villain appears in a script.
Timm and Romano will be at New York Comic Con on Friday, October 14 to present the world premiere of the Catwoman animated short and to discuss Batman: Year One during a panel from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the IGN Theater.

Following her initial recording session, Dushku was happy to download some of her thoughts regarding a number of subjects related to Catwoman, the Batman legacy, felines, bad girls and comic books. And heres what she had to say
QUESTION: You seemed to easily groove into this character. Where did you go to discover who Selina Kyle is?
ELIZA DUSHKU: I found the attitude for this character deep down in the Eliza Dushku archive of bad girls (she laughs). They’re in there somehow, somewhere for some reason, and I tap into them when I need them. Theyre characters with an edge. I grew up with three older brothers in Boston, and my mother was a single mom. So I spent my early years running the streets with the boys. After I fell into the film and television business, I went back to public school in Boston, and kids didn’t think it was that cool. So I had to kind of fight for my street cred. I adopted this really sort-of-hard exterior, and got in a couple fights. So by the time I graduated high school and came out to make Buffy The Vampire Slayer, it was really art imitating life. I was fighting for my life.
QUESTION: Does being part of the Batman mythology have any special significance to you?
ELIZA DUSHKU: It’s incredible being part of the Batman legacy. It’s iconic. It’s Batman. I grew up with brothers and we would play Batman and Robin. Well, I would always try to get in and play, but usually they would let me join the game as some character or another, and they would immediately kill me off (laughs). So, I used to watch from afar. So now look brothers I get to be a part of this and you don’t. (laughs hard)
QUESTION: Do you have a pet cat? How do you feel about cats?
ELIZA DUSHKU: I had hobo cats growing up. We had cats that would climb up on the roof of the house. We would get them off the roof, then two nights later they would be meowing on the top of the roof again. They have little attitudes, too. I ended up with dogs, mainly, but if a cat could act like a dog and could play like a dog and can play rough, then those cats got along with me. I just dont want house cats or Siamese cats they’re a little too snooty for me.
QUESTION: Did you enjoy attempting to bring a comic book to animated life?
ELIZA DUSHKU: I love that in the DC Comics world, the stakes are high from the get-go. A week ago, I was watching The Dark Knight. I love what they did, but its different from what we did for Batman: Year One and Catwoman. When you’re recreating comics, there’s different intonations and character strengths that come out. Thats what I was focused on bringing forth. Its a little exaggerated, a little nuanced, a little more dramatic. But it’s also full of layers and seething with this very cool energy.
QUESTION: Do you enjoy voice acting?
ELIZA DUSHKU: I’ve had a great time doing voiceovers. It started with videogames the first was a Buffy The Vampire Slayer videogame and really I did it because I thought it would be cool to have my nephews be able to play me on their videogames. They wont talk to me right now theyre at that stage of being a teenager so I thought maybe we could have a connection through the videogames. I did a videogame called Wet last year that was a lot of fun. Then I have some friends over at Family Guy. And then, more and more, I’ve been sort of reaching out and peeking around to see what things are available to build my voiceover resume. It’s fun for me, and completely different from what we do in live action. Voice acting is really invigorating. It still feels like you have to bring the same amount of character and energy into the room. And then to watch it morph into the animated version is really kind of magnificent.
QUESTION: Was there anything you wanted to personally add to the character that made the experience of voicing Catwoman that much more fun?
ELIZA DUSHKU: Well, I wanted to purr, and they let me purr so that was really like getting a bit of extra credit. I wanted to get in there and really emphasize her relationship with her cats, as I think its very feral and very significant. And everyone was really cool about letting me play around with my ferocity.
QUESTION: What is it you enjoy most about working in this genre?
ELIZA DUSHKU: I love my fanboys. Without my fanboys, so many of the projects that I’ve done wouldn’t have had the extraordinary life that theyve enjoyed. The fanboys have been there with enthusiasm and the support, and their loyalty and their love has made this so rewarding and exciting. It makes me just want to give them more, more, more, more.
QUESTION: The Whedonverse has provided many actors for the first 16 DC Universe Animated Original Movies. What do you think makes Joss Whedons casts fit so nicely in the DC Universe?
ELIZA DUSHKU: Joss is such a die-hard comic book fan himself that theres a natural connection. And when you play in his worlds worlds that are fantasy-related with all this metaphorical, deep magic going on, it sort of preps you to think the unthinkable and go places with your character that most projects don’t give you the opportunity to do.
QUESTION: Your parents are educators. Did comic books fit into place as literature in your house?
ELIZA DUSHKU: My father was actually a fourth grade elementary school teacher, so we had a lot of fun with dad growing up as far as comic books and trading baseball cards. That was actually one of the things that my brothers and my father and I did together play with action figures and Star Wars and G.I. Joes and Transformers, and trade and read comic books and baseball cards. My dad actually worked at and had a baseball card shop for a while, and he had comics in there. So comic books were definitely a huge part of my childhood.

New “Catwoman” Animated Short To Premiere At New York Comic Con This Friday

Warner Home Video will present the world premiere of Catwoman, the latest addition to the DC Showcase Animated Shorts series, as part of its DC Universe Animated panel on Friday, October 14 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the IGN Theater at New York Comic Con.
Catwoman is included in the October 18 Blu-ray/DVD release of Batman: Year One, the next entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies.
The panel includes animation legend Bruce Timm, nine-time Emmy Award-winning dialogue director Andrea Romano, and the fan favorite voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy. The panelists will discuss the Catwoman short, the upcoming release of Batman: Year One, and next springs release of Justice League: Doom.
The world premiere of the Justice League: Doom trailer is another New York Comic Con exclusive to be unveiled during the panel.
Catwoman/Selina Kyle is voiced by Eliza Dushku, well known for her television roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Tru Calling and Dollhouse. The 15-minute short is penned by respected comics/animation writer Paul Dini.
The short finds Catwoman posing as an entertainer in a strip club to get close to black market diamond smuggler Rough Cut who doesnt take kindly to Catwomans interference in his business, leading to an all-out battle through the streets of Gotham City.
When Alan Burnett and I first started discussing the idea of a Catwoman short, we both agreed that we wanted to make the story and the settings as adult as we could, Dini explains. The world of burlesque has returned in a big way to the contemporary consciousness, and that proved to be a very natural setting for this Catwoman story. At the time I wrote the initial screenplay, I didn’t know the short would be paired up with Batman: Year One, but the steamy setting that Selina inhabits in that book also proved to be ideal for the short.
For the short, Dini created the character Rough Cut, a villain whose smuggling interests beyond diamonds catches Catwomans attention.
I liked the idea of a villain who was obsessed with diamonds, but as this story takes place in the down and dirty side of Gotham, I felt the bad guy couldn’t be too glamorous, Dini says. I came up with the name Rough Cut both to describe the man and the kinds of crude, unfinished diamonds he pedals. There’s always a market for industrial diamonds, but lately Rough Cut has been feeling the economic pinch, so he’s smuggling more precious cargo. That’s what brings Catwoman into the picture.
Dushku was very happy to return to her Batman: Year One role, having already taken equity in the part of Catwoman/Selina Kyle. Dushku has definitely found a clear understanding of her characters emotional make-up.
A lot of people are familiar with the characters Ive played these strong and vicious women who are, very deep down inside, really wounded women with an entirely unexpected side, so theres nothing black and white about them, Dushku says. I think people identify with the characters I play because even though they do terrible things, theres a humanity there. Theyve got lots of layers. Theyre not just good or evil. Selina is a prostitute, and shes abrasive and in your face, but she also has this maternal, protective, loyal quality to her. Her relationship with Holly is a perfect example it shows a side you might not expect.

Actor Alex Rocco On “Batman: Year One” Animated Feature, New Images Released

Coming to Blu-ray, DVD on October 18, 2011 from Warner Home Video
Alex Rocco, best known for his role as gangster Moe Greene in The Godfather, returns to his mobster roots as Carmine Falcone in Batman: Year One, the next entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies.
The appearance in a Dark Knight-related project brings Roccos 44-year career full circle. The Massachusetts-born actor, who was once an adjunct member of Bostons Winter Hill Gang, got his first on-screen role in the 1960s Batman television series.
Rocco appeared as the thug Block in the back-to-back episodes A Piece of the Action and Batmans Satisfaction, which premiered on March 1 and 2, 1967. The episodes also featured the first true crossover appearance of Green Hornet and Kato on the Batman series (aside from a cameo popping out a window in the first season).
Since then, Rocco has been seen on primetime in everything from Get Smart, The F.B.I. and Kojak to The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Rockford Files and Baretta. He has had recurring roles on The Facts of Life, The Famous Teddy Z, Sibs, The George Carlin Show and The Division. His voice is easily recognized as Roger Myers Jr., the head of Itchy & Scratchy Studios on The Simpsons.
In feature films, Roccos most notable roles include Moe Greene (and his gruesome demise) in The Godfather, the comically curious police chief in The Stunt Man, and as over-the-top Sol Siler, the head of Playtone Records in That Thing You Do!

Executive producer Bruce Timm and casting/dialogue director Andrea Romano will be at New York Comic Con to discuss Batman: Year One during a panel on Friday, October 14 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the IGN Theater. They are joined by Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman in the upcoming Justice League: Doom.
Rocco, an agreeable and funny man in person, spent a few extra minutes after his initial recording session to chat about mob bosses, Burt Wards whining, Julie Newmars sex appeal, and how to get ahead in Hollywood when your bartending partner takes a bathroom break. Take note Moe Greene, er, Alex Rocco is speaking.
QUESTION: Youre no stranger to gangsters. How did you choose to interpret Falcone?
ALEX ROCCO: I always seem to play everybody’s dad or the gangster. So Falcone to me was like one of the five families from New York, maybe Vito Genovese, somebody like that. He takes his food very seriously, his drink very seriously, his women very seriously. The bottom line is he’s a scumbag, but he thinks he has a lot of class, so I tried to incorporate that.
It’s fun playing gangsters. Where else can you say, Get up against the wall, I’m gonna blow your head away. Well, where else can you say that and not get arrested? I really love playing gangsters.
QUESTION: So you really dont mind being typecast as a gangster?
ALEX ROCCO: Not at all. Whatever pays, thats great. I like comedy and I like gangsters. I always had trouble with love scenes. I’m so insecure. But playing gangsters is great. They usually dress you sharp. And you have a license to pretty much bully anybody. I mean, I wouldnt dare do that at home. My wife will give me a back hander. So doing it at work is a great release it saves you all that money at the shrink.
QUESTION: Is it true you had some real-life experience with gangsters and the mob back in your young days in Boston?
ALEX ROCCO: I come from a place called Winter Hill, and I was kind of a wannabe gangster. I started off running errands for the guys that were always dressed nice in the long collars with their initials. They called me Bobo, and it was always Bobo, go get me a milkshake or Go grab me the newspaper, and theyd throw me a few bucks. Plus I learned a lot from the gangsters. Things like you never look at another guy’s wife, always leave a good tip, never eat meat on Friday but you can kill all during the week.
QUESTION: Did your mob experience help you in the entertainment business?
QUESTION: How did hustling get you that first gig on the Batman television series?
ALEX ROCCO: I’d worked at the Rain Check Room an actor’s hangout for a while. Youd see people in there like Robert Vaughn, Shelley Winters and Rock Hudson, who used to comb his hair the other way to try and be incognito. I was one of the two main bartenders along with an actor named Arch Whiting, who was down the other end (of the bar). He worked on Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea and Batman, just about any series at that time. Mike McLean was a casting guy at 20th, and he used to call for Arch. I knew the routine. Hed call Arch and ask, You available Ive got one line for Bottom Of The Sea. I was a little jealous and I never really loved Arch that much. So one day, Arch goes to the bathroom and the phone rang. Its Mike from 20th and hes looking for Arch. I said, No, he’s on vacation in Mexico. What are you calling for? And he said he had something for him for Batman. And I says, Hey, I did eight Naked Citys for Gold Medal knowing that Gold Medals Studios in New York had burnt down, and they can’t get the footage to check me out. I said, I’m a hell of an actor. And he said, Pay is 150 bucks and it’s two lines. And that was my first gig. I stole the Batman gig and it turned out it was a two-partner where they introduced The Green Hornet and Bruce Lee, who ended up teaching my kids martial arts. So yeah, it was funny when they called and asked if I wanted to be in this picture, I flashed back on 1966. So this is fun.
QUESTION: Do you have any special memories from your Batman TV series experience?
ALEX ROCCO: Adam West was terrific. The kiddo that was a pain in the ass was Robin. The director would say Grab his wrist and hold him up against the wall, and then the kid would whine, He hit my wrist. And Adam looked at me and said He does it to every actor. I remember the villain Roger C. Carmel, and Julie Newmar was on set. Oh man, Julie Newmar — I had such a crush on her. She was in costume in the commissary, and I was just smitten.
QUESTION: Did you ever read comics?
ALEX ROCCO: As a kid, Id go down to Murray’s Drugstore in Boston Id just kind of turn the rack around and around, looking at all the comic books. Id buy them and read them, then me and my buddies would trade them. I never did think of them as a collectors’ item, but I loved buying them. I had great Batmans and Supermans, and I always thought they were better than baseball cards. It was fun getting baseball cards, but a comic book is an adventure.
I liked Captain Marvel and Superman, as well as Batman. Ive got to admit that I learned a lot from reading this script I never really knew Batmans whole backstory with the death of his parents, all of that. I was really drawn in. Now I want to know more about Bruce Wayne in this mythology.
When I was a kid, though, it was Captain Marvel because he was the one that, when he said Shazam, he would change. It was magical. And he’s always looked nice. I’ve always wanted to look like Captain Marvel. So my favorites were Captain Marvel, Superman and Batman. And Ive got a little bit of love for Wonder Woman because, you know, just look at her. Plus shes got an invisible plane. How can you beat that?

Warner Home Video Releases New Clip From “Batman: Year One” Animated Feature
Warner Home Video has released a new video clip from Batman: Year One, the upcoming animated feature based on the acclaimed graphic novel of the same name. Warner Home Video will present a DC Universe Animated Original Movie panel at New York Comic Con on Friday, October 14. Among those participating are executive producer Bruce Timm, dialogue/casting director Andrea Romano and the perennial choice of Batman, Kevin Conroy. The panel, slated for 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the IGN, will feature the premiere of both the Paul Dini-scripted Catwoman animated short and the trailer for Justice League: Doom, as well as discussion of those two projects and Batman: Year One.
Batman: Year One is based on the landmark 1987 DC Comics titles from 12-time Eisner Award winner Frank Miller and illustrator David Mazzucchelli. The film depicts young Bruce Waynes return to Gotham City in his first attempts to fight injustice as a costumed vigilante. The playboy billionaire chooses the guise of a giant bat to combat crime, creates an early bond with a young Lieutenant James Gordon (who is already battling corruption from inside the police department), inadvertently plays a role in the birth of Catwoman, and helps to bring down a crooked political system that infests Gotham.
Primetime television stars Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Ben McKenzie (Southland, The O.C.), Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) provide the core voices for Batman: Year One. Three-time Emmy Award winner Cranston gives voice to young Jim Gordon, while McKenzie makes his animated voiceover debut as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Fanboy favorites Dushku and Sackhoff fill the roles of Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Detective Sarah Essen, respectively. Alex Rocco (The Godfather) is the voice of crime lord Carmine Falcone.
Animation master Bruce Timm is executive producer of Batman: Year One. Directors are Lauren Montgomery (Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) and Sam Liu (All-Star Superman) from a script penned by Academy Award nominee Tab Murphy (Gorillas in the Mist, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse).

Continuing, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment today released a new image from the upcoming Batman: Arkham City video game. The image provides a first look at Nightwing in the Batman: Arkham Asylum video game. Batman: Arkham City will be available October 18th, 2011 in North America for Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Games for Windows PC and the PlayStation3 computer entertainment system. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment today announced the Nightwing Bundle Pack for Batman: Arkham City will be available November 1. Nightwing comes complete with his own unique gadgets and special moves, and is playable in all challenge maps in the game, as well as two additional challenge maps that are included with the pack: Wayne Manor and Main Hall. The pack also contains a bonus Animated Series Nightwing character skin.
The Robin Bundle Pack is scheduled for availability on November 22 to all owners of the game.
Both download content bundles will be offered on Xbox LIVE Marketplace for 560 Microsoft Points and PlayStationNetwork for $6.99.

This October 14th, Green Lantern flies onto Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital Download from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.
Green Lantern will be available on Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, featuring a 3D hi-definition, a hi-definition, a standard definition and an UltraViolet Digital Copy of the standard definition theatrical version of the film, for $40.99; Blu-ray Combo Pack, featuring a hi-definition, a standard definition and an UltraViolet Digital Copy of the standard definition theatrical version of the film, for $35.99; and on single disc DVD with UltraViolet Digital Copy for $28.98. The extended cut will be in hi-definition on the Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack and Blu-ray Combo Pack only.
UltraViolet Digital Copy allows consumers to download the film to a PC or Mac plus instantly stream it from a digital cloud to many computers, tablets or smartphones.
