Large-Size Images Released From Upcoming “Batman: Year One” Animated Release
Two large-size images from Batman: Year One, the next installment in the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line set for release on October 18th, 2011, have been made available from Warner Home Video. Please note that while the images are of large size, they are not in high-definition quality. Producer James Tucker Discusses New “Batman: The Brave And The Bold” Episode
The World’s Finest caught up with Batman: The Brave and The Bold Producer James Tucker to discuss the latest episode of the acclaimed animated series, “Scorn of the Star Sapphire!” The all-new episode debuts Friday, September 16th, 2011 at 6:00pm (ET) on Cartoon Network. The World’s Finest: First off, can you give us a rundown of what we can expect in the episode “Scorn of the Star Sapphire!,” debuting this week on Cartoon Network!
James Tucker: “Scorn of the Star Sapphire” is our Green Lantern showcase for this season. As you can guess, the villainess is Star Sapphire and will also include some cameos from some old and more recent Green Lantern villains. We havent used Hal Jordan much on Batman: The Brave and the Bold, so we thought it was time to give him a spotlight. I really wanted to do a Green Lantern story that didnt focus on OA or the space opera aspects of GLs mythos as much. With Hal, theres his whole life on earth that usually gets ignored when it comes to non-comic related representations, so I really wanted this to be an earth-bound Green Lantern story with none of the Guardians or other Green Lanterns around that dealt specifically with Hal Jordans personal life and his relationship to Carol Ferris. This was a far more psychological story than we usually do and I think, especially for those not familiar with all things Green Lantern, that there are some nice revelations into his character. J.M. DeMatteis did his usual stellar job on the script as well.
The highlight of this episode for me though, was the teaser which features the first official appearance of Wonder Woman. She had a cameo in one episode that we snuck in but this one will be the one old school Wonder Woman fans will have been waiting for. I personally storyboarded this teaser because Im a huge Wonder Woman fan, so it was a lot of fun and one of the perks of being the producer! I tried to cram as much Wonder Woman-centric stuff into the teaser as possible including some very nostalgic references to the old TV series.
WF: This series has used Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan on a fairly regular basis, moreso Guy than Hal. What do you find engaging about these two Lanterns? Would you have ever considered bringing in John Stewart or Kyle Rayner, like Justice League Unlimited?
JT: The challenge of this show was always deciding which version to use of the multiple versions of heroes who share the same name that exist in the DC Universe. The thing I love about DC is that DC characters tend to be about family and legacy, so the mantels (I hate that word, by the way) tend to get passed along from person to person, parent to offspring, etc. This is very cool for a kid reading about the history of these characters and its great playing connect the dots and trying to figure out the history of DCs characters, but to make it understandable for a casual viewer has always been a challenge. Its just not possible to use every version of a character that exists and not hopeless confuse the audience that isnt in the know. Having said that, we regularly pushed the boundaries of that in our episodes and I think by and large we embraced the whole of what DC comics is and tried to make it accessible and enjoyable to fans who only had passing knowledge of the comics as well as enjoyable to long time fans. Anyway, its my feeling that the earth based Green Lantern situation is just one of those things thats just too confusing to lay people and having two earth based Green Lanterns in one show is pushing it. So, since we used Kyle and John very prominently in the earlier DCUA series, I wanted to stick with Guy and Hal. Mainly Guy, since he has a very strong personality that creates sparks when hes bouncing off other heroes. Hal as a Green Lantern is fine, but its his private life as Hal and the complications he has with his interpersonal relationships that make him interesting for me.
WF: The classic villainess Star Sapphire gets plenty of screentime in this new episode. Given her infamous barely there costume and sometimes conflicting origin, was she a hard character to adapt? Is there any other GL villain you wouldve liked to have used? Perhaps Hector Hammond? Maybe even Black Hand?
JT: I really wanted to do a Star Sapphire focused story because shes got a great origin and complicated relationship to Green Lantern that weve never been able to touch on in animation. Mainly because we used John Stewart on Justice League and Justice League Unlimited and also the default villain mode with Green Lantern is always Sinestro. So Im glad we got to use Sapphire and give her a decent showcase. I wasnt as interested in Hector Hammond because weve already used The Misfit as a reoccurring villain, and you dont need more than one huge headed mega genius villain in any given series, in my opinion. I never got Black Hand to be honest, but its kind of moot since we knew wed probably only do one Green Lantern related story in our last season.
WF: Green Lantern is a character with considerable powers. How do you balance having him and Batman share an adventure, or fight a villain, and making sure both heroes are on equal footing?
JT: Batman doesnt have to do much to hold his own with other heroes. People root for him because hes the only one usually without superpowers, and he does tend to be the smartest person in the room. The fact that Batman isnt afraid of anything helps the audience buy that, even when hes on another planet surrounded by Para Demons, all he needs is a couple of batarangs to handle the situation. The force of his personality is enough for the audience to believe that he can stand shoulder to shoulder with these other god-like beings.
WF: Any final hints, perhaps an inside joke or easter eggs, that fans should keep an eye out for when watching the new episode “Scorn of the Star Sapphire!,” debuting this week?
JT: Given that we finished these episodes almost a year ago, the memory fails, but expect a lot of nostalgic shout outs to Wonder Woman history in the teaser and a lot of Green Lantern references in the main story. The teaser especially was a labor of love for me to produce!

“Young Justice” Comic Series Consistent On Sales Charts, Shows Steady Performance
With seven issues in total, including the special #0 preview issue, the Young Justice comic series is not only a consistent performer in the comic book market place, but is also the highest selling All-Ages title from DC Comics. The title features stories that expand on the continuity of the hit Young Justice animated series, providing a closer look at the team and their world. The series debuted in January 2011 with a special #0 preview issue, with issue #1 following in February.
Young Justice sold nearly 11,000 copies with it’s #1 issue, one of the highest recorded debuts for an all-ages Johnny DC title. The title experienced standard attrition in the following months, as comic shops leveled their orders to meet the expectant demand. Not only did initial sales level out quickly, a rarity in the direct comic market, but they are also remaining consistent. However, sales for the title are expected to increase with issue #7, now on shelves, the debut of Young Justice series producer Greg Weisman as co-writer for the comic. Below are sales numbers for the first seven issues of the Young Justice DC Comics title, including the #0 preview issue.

Interview With “Green Lantern: The Animated Series” Comic Book Artist Dario Brizuela
Artist Dario Brizuela, know for his work on the DC Comics series Justice League Unlimited and Batman: The Brave and The Bold, took time out of his busy schedule to discuss his upcoming stint as regular artist for the upcoming Green Lantern: The Animated Series comic title from DC Comics. The new Green Lantern: The Animated Series comic title debuts with a special #0 issue coming November 2011, featuring art by Brizuela with a script from Art Balazar and Franco. The World’s Finest: First off, care to remind readers of who you are and some of your past works, both for DC Comics and Marvel Comics?
Dario Brizuela: Sure, no problem! I started at DC / Wildstorm doing a back-up story called Nanobotz for the miniseries Robo Dojo. Afterwards, I found work on the Ben 10, JLU, and Super Friends comics. More recently I worked on the Batman: The Brave and the Bold comic and now Green Lantern: The Animated Series.
For Marvel I did licensing work on Spider-Man and Friends and The Super Hero Squad, along with the The Super Hero Squad comic strip for the Marvel website. I also provided art for the The Super Hero Squad Show Little Brow books, Iron Man: Armored Adventures books, Marvel Adventures The Avengers, Mini-Hulks strips and the The Super Hero Squad Show comic book.
WF: The new Green Lantern: The Animated Series comic book kicks off this November 2011. How did you get the assignment? Are you in it for the long-run? What are you looking forward to working on this comic?
DB: Well, I’m always in touch with the editors. I saw the promotional image of Green Lantern: The Animated Series in the Bruce Timm CGI-style – that was the only image I saw on the web – so there were not many samples out there. But I started to talk with the editors and told them if DC Comics is planning a comic book for the show to please keep me in mind.
So, one day I was sending some of my Transformers work to Ben Abernathy, and he told me that editor Kristy Quinn is looking for an artist for the new Green Lantern: The Animated Series book. So, I wrote her a line, did some samples and now I’m happy to be on the book.
And yes, I’m on it for the long run.
I’m looking have a lot of fun working on this comic! The characters are really important, and as an artist I have to be ready to draw everything the Green Lantern: The Animated Series writers want. Art Baltazar and Franco are awesome, and they have this limitless imagination!
WF: Have you seen any footage from the upcoming Green Lantern: The Animated Series? Any teases or spoilers you can drop on the fans?
DB: I have seen the short preview Cartoon Network released online, that was a good reference, but I also have many images the editor sent me – like character designs, backgrounds, vehicles – and it all looks fantastic!
WF: Does the CG animation in Green Lantern: The Animated Series bring any worry for you when it comes to adapting its style?
DB: Not really. I love Bruce Timm’s style and designs, and we follow that line very closely.
WF: How does working on the Green Lantern: The Animated Series comic differ from your past assignments with other DC Comics cartoon books?
DB: Well, for the first time I’m the regular artist! I’m incredibly happy! This is a new challenge, but I’ll be able to keep a great quality of work on the book every month!
Working on this book is like any other. I receive the script, I send layouts to the writers and editors and they tell me if they like it or if they want something changed. Then I do the pencil work and, if approved, I move on to the inks.
WF: Based on your past works, including Justice League Unlimited and Batman: The Brave and The Bold, you can really adapt to the art-styles of these different shows. How do you do that without losing your own unique style and touches?
DB: I think you can see my style in the storytelling. I try to do dynamic images and make sure the characters actually act. As for the designs, as I said before, I love Bruce Timm’s work and he’s a big influence on my own work. I also love animation, and that also provides some great inspiration.
WF: Any past comic book work that stick out as some of your favorite? Why?
DB: I really enjoy my work on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was in charge of the pencils, inks and greytones when I worked on that comic, so it was really cool to have all of that control over the artwork. I also really enjoy my work on the animated Transformers comic for IDW. I only did the short stories, but I really liked the character designs.
But I think my all-time favorite is Justice League Unlimited issue #41. It was a great story and I got to draw Harley and the Joker in the Timm style!
WF: You also work outside the comic field, including work on animated series. How does working on an animated series differ from working on a comic book?
DB: My experience in animation was on a movie call El Arca (The Ark), made in Argentina. I worked on both storyboards and backgrounds. The experience was great! I think all the comic artist should have some work experience with an animation studio. It really changes how you approach, layout and draw a comic page. Plus, the team work is pretty amazing.
WF: You are also working on projects outside of the Green Lantern: The Animated Series comic book. Care to share on where else we can find you work?
DB: I’m working for Little Brown books doing story books of The Super Hero Squad Show. I’m also doing a Voltron graphic novel for Viz Media and also a prequel book based on an upcoming movie I can’t tell you about yet! Sorry!
