Video released Superman: A Little Piece of Home, a collection of four episodes from the 1996 through 2000 seasons of the animated series. Purely intended as an impulse purchase, this collection is made for those unwilling to pay the $10 or so more dollars for the box sets, or the parents looking for a way to ignore their child for 90
minutes. From the fifty four episodes series, the following four are included – ‘A Little Piece of Home," "Speed Demons," "The Late Mr. Kent," and
"Where There’s Smoke." These are four solid episodes from various points in the series run. Like the storytelling, the voice acting is top notch and the animation is solid, save for a few low points in "Where’s There
Smoke." And speaking of "…Smoke" for a second – how about that guest voice cast for the episode? Peter Gallagher (The O.C.),
Dennis Haysbert (24), Peri Gilpin (Fraiser), and William H. Macy (Batman Beyond, Cellular
all have roles in that episode. Wow! The transfers of the episodes are a little above broadcast standards, but barely. It’s clear no effort was made to clean up these releases and not much would have been needed, really While there are still plenty of dust and scratches, there are thankfully no annoying station logos to block out some of the picture. As usual, the extras are subpar with only a trivia track, repeated on Superman:
The Animated Series – Volume One, as the set’s only saving grace. The interactive game and tour is pure kiddie fluff, and should be bothered with. This disc appears to be an appetizer for the Superman: The
Animated Series box sets, helping tide over fans until the sets can be purchased. This release follows the same pattern as previous single disc volume release with a small collection of episodes and minimal extras. This single volume can be skipped, instead purchase the current box set available for purchase. |
