Watchmen, Chapter 2 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review
By James Harvey

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment basically gives Watchmen, Chapter Two its standard home video release treatment, pairing a fantastic HD presentation across multiple formats with a handful of extras. However, this time around, the studio has surprisingly put in a little more effort than usual when it comes to the special features, providing nearly 40 minutes of bonus material. So, considering that and the superior performance of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc and, well, it should be a no-brainer which edition fans eager to own Watchmen, Chapter Two should consider snatching it up.

As with Watchmen, Chapter One, the 4K UltraHD Blu-ray edition for Two features a fantastic 2160p transfer. Given the native 4K source material, the UltraHD disc suffers from no compression issues of macroblocking, looking as smooth and crystal clear as can be. Colors are bold and vivid with blacks as deep as can be, even with some of the effects used to give the movie an occasional hazy and grain look. The digital and regular Blu-ray editions also look fine, but the 4K UltraHD Blu-ray disc reigns supreme.

The same can almost be said about the audio quality of the 4K UltraHD Blu-ray disc, which is superb but not as near-flawless as the video quality. The DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track is still excellent, but it also plays it pretty safe and keeps the track mostly front-loaded and centered. There is multi-channel use to be sure, but it doesn’t push the mix as far as it should. Still, nothing to scoff at and easy superior to the other versions available.

A nice surprise is the amount of bonus content included with Watchmen, Chapter Two, which adds up to nearly 40 minutes, double the length from the Chapter One extras. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a depressingly small amount compared to the lengthy bonus material that home media content was infamous for. Another little surprise here is how in-depth these bonus features actually go.

Up first is “Dave Gibbons and Watchmen: Endgame (7:16),” where the Watchmen artist and co-creator discuss the challenges they faced in formulating the story and creating the comic. Gibbons also discusses some of the book’s themes and how they guided the film creators’ story-telling execution. DC president, publisher, and chief creative officer Jim Lee, comic editor Barbara Kesel, and the producer and director Brandon Vietti all chime in one the comics impact and legacy, and the end result makes for a neat, quick watch.

Following is the slightly longer “The Art of Adaptation: Building to the Final Act (10:05),” which features all the participants from the “Endgame” featurette plus producer Jim Krieg, storyboard artist Danica Dickison, character designer Dusty Abell, and producer Cindy Rago. The gang here discusses the visual approach to translating the comic to the screen, and it features a good chunk of behind-the-scenes tidbits and production material.

The bonus features wrap with the lengthiest of the bunch, “Designing Watchmen (22:01),” which dives even further into the production of the two-part DC Animated Movie adaptation. Gibbons, Lee, Kesel, Vietti, Krieg, Dickison, and Abell all return to again break down the cast and story behind the source material, the film’s visual approach and how the feature was produced. The participants discuss the creative choices made, and the subsequent required plot changes, and more, and it’s all done in a pretty upfront and occasionally frank manner that’s refreshing to see.

Outside of the extra digital copy, that wraps things up for Watchmen, Chapter Two‘s bonus features. Even with the extra bonus content, it’s still a pretty routine release from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. It also goes without saying that the 4K UltraHD Blu-ray edition holds the best possible viewing experience for those wanting to pick up this pretty great (and final) DC Animated Movie entry.

The two-part Watchmen animated adaptation ends strong, and the best way to enjoy this thriller is yet again on 4K. The iTunes and Blu-ray editions make for fine alternatives, with the audio and video strong enough for those not particularly picky about presentation, and thankfully the bonus content is identical across each format. Folks interested in picking up this fantastic feature should definitely go for the 4K UltraHD Blu-ray release to get the best possible experience! Highly Recommended!
