Producer James Tucker On “Batman: The Brave And The Bold – Season Two, Part Two”
Officially announced last week, with details available here at The World’s Finest, the upcoming Batman: The Brave and The Bold – Season Two, Part Two DVD collection is set to include the episode “The Mask of Matches Malone.” The episode, which has yet to air on Cartoon Network despite airing in other regions worldwide, features Batman and all-female team Birds of Prey facing off against Two-Face. The World’s Finest caught up with Batman: The Brave and The Bold producer James Tucker to briefly touch upon the episode and its inclusion on the next Batman: The Brave and The Bold DVD home video release. The Batman: The Brave and The Bold Season Two, Part Two two-disc DVD release is set to hit shelves March 20th, 2012. Continue below for more.
The World’s Finest: Can you explain a little bit of the history behind the “The Mask of Matches Malone!” episode, namely why the episode remains unseen on Cartoon Network?
James Tucker: This episode was our answer to the fans who complained about the lack of females in the first season of the series. The teaser involved Black Orchid – one of my favorite C-listers – helping Batman take on Poison Ivy, and included henchwomen designed to look like Pam Grier, Tura Satana, and Honey West. The main story, The Mask of Matches Malone, is basically a romp featuring the Birds of Prey – in this incarnation Huntress, Black Canary, and Catwoman – teaming up with Batman to catch Two-Face. It was meant to be our take on a Damon Runyan-type story, with gangsters, molls, mystical cloaks, amnesia, resurrection of the dead, and a splashy musical number. I think its one of our best episodes and Im really proud of it. Ive never heard anything official as to why the episode wasnt aired but it would seem some of juvenile internet rumblings over the content in the musical number would be the obvious answer. I think, but have no confirmation, that the network wasnt comfortable airing the episode in its usual early time slot with the TV-Y7FV rating and there wasnt another viable slot to move it to that didnt displace the other series on that night, so it fell through the cracks.
WF: While there is a chance that Cartoon Network may air the episode before this DVD collection hits, are you excited that audiences will finally get to see The Mask of Matches Malone? Which version of the episode will it be the original or tweaked version?
JT: I believe it will be the final version we delivered, which could be called tweaked but I would call it improved. Since I storyboarded the sequence myself, I can give it my seal of approval because now the scene is subtler and more witty than Id originally boarded it. This was a case where we were asked to change something and it actually helped the content.
WF: Were you worried the episode might not make it on to the collection? Did you do anything to make sure it would be?
JT: We werent overly worried, but emails were exchanged to double-check and make sure the episode was going to be included.
WF: Any final comments – for now – on those fans who may havent picked up these great two-disc DVD sets as of yet?
JT: Ive been very pleased with the DVD volume sets that have come out overall. I urge folks who would like to see Batman: The Brave and the Bold get its own Direct-to-Video animated feature to support these releases when they come out. Thats the only way Warner Home Video will know that theres a desire for a long form Batman: The Brave and the Bold feature to cap off the series.
