Writer/Producer Joshua Fine Shares His Thoughts On DC Entertainment Cartoon Shows
Writer/Producer Josh Fine, whose recent work includes the acclaimed The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, took a few moments from his busy schedule to discuss his thoughts on DC Entertainment’s slate of animated shows starring DC Comics characters. Please note these questions were answered after Fine left the position of Marvel Animation Director of Development last month.
The World’s Finest: What DC Comics-based cartoons are you watching right now?
Josh Fine: I’m following Young Justice right now, which has been a fun show. I’m a fan of Greg Weisman’s shows, having worked with him on The Spectacular Spider-Man a few years back. I also love Phil Baroussas character designs. He did an incredible job for us on Planet Hulk and the upcoming Thor: Tales of Asgard which releases in a month. It’s cool to see his takes on this other universes characters.
I’ve also been taking some time to catch up on episodes of Justice League / Justice League Unlimited that I missed.
WF: Would you ever consider working on a DC comics-based cartoon project? Any favorite characters in particular?
JF: Yes, I definitely would. Many have heard that I recently left Marvel to focus on forwarding my career as a writer, so I don’t think this is taboo for me to say anymore. I grew up reading equal parts Spider-Man, X-Men, and Batman comics, and the X-Men and Batman animated series of the nineties were instrumental in turning me into a fan of both comics in general and the Marvel and DC pantheons respectively. My favorite DC character is probably Robin. I always really liked the idea of a kid who had been trained by Batman, this brilliant detective and master martial artist. A kid who’s thrust into the same crazy world of Gotham City, but is more vulnerable, less prepared, and in a lot of ways more human than the Dark Knight himself.
WF: How do you think DC Comics-based cartoons differ from Marvel? How does The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes differ from, say, Justice League?
JF: I’m not sure that there’s a fundamental difference that you can really point to outside of the characters. I think most of the shows that Marvel has made recently are very different even from one another, and the same could be said for DC’s recent work. The main difference comes from the type of characters that you find in each. DC was really built on an idea of dream-fulfillment, how cool would it be to have all of these abilities? All of these resources? To be able to face down impossible odds by yourself? On the Marvel side of things, the Universe was founded on the human struggles of the characters. Sure Spidey has amazing abilities, but with that power comes extraordinary responsibility. It means that its hard to be Peter Parker you’re always going to be late for that date, you’re always going be just barely scraping by financially. I think there’s a human element in Marvel’s characters that you can really relate to on a human level. Where DC is sort of the guys that you aspire to become.
WF: Is there room for both DC Comics and Marvel cartoons, both on the comic shelves and on DVD shelves?
JF: No. One must die.
The great thing about being a fan of comics and cartoons and Super Heroes is that there’s no reason why you cant just enjoy both. It’s like I quite enjoy Pizza. But I also love Ice Cream. It would kind of suck if I had to pick one of the other. I’d much rather eat both. Preferably in quick succession.

The newest Warner Bros. Animationproduced hit series on Cartoon Network finally arrives on DVD as Warner Home Video (WHV) unleashes its secret weapon with Young Justice Season 1 Volume 1. These DC Universe teenage super heroes have quickly proven to be a hit as the favorite show among boys 9-14. With non-stop action, Young Justice Season 1 Volume 1 comes to DVD for the first time on July 19, 2011.In Young Justice, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if youre not just a normal teenager? What if youre a teenage super hero? How much harder will it be to prove yourself in a world of super powers, super villains and super secrets? These teenage heroes collectively become the Justice Leagues secret weapon against the forces of evil. The young protgs must put their super hero education to the test and band together to covertly fight the evildoers that exist on Earth-16. Utilizing The Cave as their home base, the teen heroes will take on under-the-radar missions that would be impossible for the leagues famous and identifiable elders to handle secretly.
While the team works to take on more super hero responsibilities, they are in constant training by the Justice League to eventually take their place alongside the great heroes. Red Tornado is their supervisor; Black Canary is in charge of their training; and Batman determines and directs their assignments. Of course, in true teenage fashion, the members of the team push the limits of their missions, often turning a simple assignment from Batman into something significantly larger.

Trade Ad, Episode Details For “Young Justice – Season One, Volume One” DVD Release
Initial details and a trade ad for the upcoming Young Justice – Season One, Volume One, set to hit shelves July 19th, 2011, have been made available by Warner Home Video. The single-disc release will include the first four episodes from the acclaimed animated series, though details of any additional bonus features are currently unconfirmed. The single-disc Young Justice – Season One, Volume One DVD release will include the episodes “Independence Day, Part One,” “Fireworks (Independence Day, Part Two),” “Welcome to Happy Harbor,” and “Drop Zone.” The total running time for the disc is 88 minutes, with all episodes featured in standard 1.78:1 widescreen. “All-Star Superman” Continues Successful Home Video Run, Nearly 500,000 Units Sold
According to various home media retailing outlets and independent research, the recent All-Star Superman direct-to-video animated feature has been selling consistently for Warner Home Video in its first two months of retail sale. The acclaimed DC Universe Animated Original Movie title has moved nearly 250,000 units on DVD since it hit shelves on February 22nd, 2011. Additionally, the Blu-ray release of All-Star Superman has also continued to sell just as well, easily keeping pace with its DVD counterpart and moving upwards of nearly 210,000 copies on the high-definition format during the same timeframe. The All-Star Superman animated feature is expected to sell over 500,000 copies on both DVD and Blu-ray by the end of May 2011. Keep in mind the sales numbers above do not take into account rental numbers, OnDemand numbers, or legal download numbers.
The All-Star Superman animated feature adapted the acclaimed Grant Morrison comic book of the same name, and was written by the late Dwayne McDuffie.
The previous title in the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, has moved over 650,000 units on Blu-ray and DVD since its September 2010. Additionally, the DC Animated Shorts release Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam! has moved nearly 375,000 copies on both Blu-ray and DVD since it bowed in November 2010.

“Young Justice,” “Batman: The Brave And The Bold” Cartoon Network Ratings Update
An all-new episode of Batman: The Brave and The Bold and a rerun of Young Justice brought in solid ratings for Cartoon Network on Friday, April 22nd, 2011, according to data released by Nielsen Media Research and Turner Broadcasting System.
