Observations:

Written by Frontier, edited by James Harvey

So basically Vandal Savage founded not only Atlantis, but the line of Arion continues to this day through Orin? Never expected that relation. But jeez, Vandal Savage saw a utopia and a happy populace and peace and, with barely a second thought, wiped it out with help from Klarion the Witch Boy. I’m sure there won’t be any unforeseen consequences…

The Phantom Stranger, who joined in the last episode, may be enigmatic and vague, but he knows how to make an impression, here playing a key role in getting our heroes where they need to be.

And that’s all because of Klarion, who continues to cause trouble while, at the same time, making the fight against Child more difficult too. By the standards of the Lords of Chaos, Klarion’s basically become Savage’s dog, just helping him in a scheme that, from a net perspective, seems more in the service of Order for The Light than actual Chaos. So they sent the Child to replace him. And she’s got all their power on her side

But … that’s going to be a mistake. Klarion definitely has some more tricks up his sleeve. Still, how much longer will Savage see Klarion as a necessary evil and how much of Klarion can he really tolerate? Despite everything Klarion’s done to his family and others over the centuries, Savage still seems to believes in the nasty little demon boy.

Moving away from the magic and to something a little more grounded, Beast Boy continues to struggle and, somehow, the team still hasn’t stepped in. He’s in as bad of a funk as M’Gann, but maybe the big difference is how Beast Boy isn’t being entirely upfront with his current state of mind.

Now back to the magic show! When you need some magic muscle, you can’t go wrong with Jason Blood and his demon pal, Etrigan! Jason Blood is now a sarcastic, embittered, man who has lived a long life with a hefty burden placed upon him. A nice touch here was the use of the old school Etrgian transformation chant, delivered nicely by actor David Shaugnessy.

The desperation here is palpable, too. The situation seems lost, and nothing sells that more than Zatanna knowing she has to bring in Dr. Fate. This leads to a great moment with Savage, as he speaks directly to his son Nabu and implores him to work with Klarion to stop the Child for the fate of the Earth. Things are desperate, and even Savage is taking the magical threat of Child seriously. It’ll be interesting to see how this all comes together.
