“Vixen” Animated Series Coming Fall 2015 To CW Seed
On January 11, 2015, The CW announced at the Television Critics Association press tour that a new animated webseries based on the DC Comics character Vixen is headed to CW Seed – The CW’s digital-only studio. From Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim, Vixen will debut come Fall 2015. The series, the potential first season of an ongoing series, will consist of six episodes running between four – seven minutes.
The CW describes Vixen as:
Originally from Africa, Mari McCabe’s (voiced by Megalyn Echikunwoke) parents were killed by local greed, corruption, and wanton violence. But the orphaned Mari refuses to succumb to the terrors surrounding her. Inheriting her family’s Tantu Totem, Mari can access the powers of animals—anything from the super-strength of a gorilla to the speed of a cheetah. As Vixen, she fights valiantly to protect the world from the threats like those that claimed her family.
Vixen is produced by Blue Ribbon Content and is based on DC characters. Executive producers are Greg Berlanti (Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Supergirl), Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) and Andrew Kreisberg (Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Supergirl). James Tucker (DC Universe Original Movies, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) is the producer; Tucker and Curt Geda (Beware the Batman, Batman Beyond) are the directors. It was written by Wendy Mericle (Arrow), Keto Shimizu (Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), Brian Ford Sullivan (Arrow), Lauren Certo (The Flash), Nolan Dunbar (Arrow), Sarah Tarkoff (Arrow) and Marc Guggenheim, with Guggenheim and Shimizu serving as story editors.
The character of Vixen will also play a role in the DC Comics’ live-action super hero shows which currently air on The CW, though specific episode details are currently not known. The CW is expected to release more details on the series in the coming months leading up to the Fall 2015 debut of Vixen on the CW seed digital service.
Vixen was previously heavily featured in the Justice League Unlimited and Batman: The Brave and the Bold animated series. Stay tuned for further select updates right here at The World’s Finest.

A Message From The World’s Finest
First off, apologies for the rather bland subject line up there. It comes off more ominous than it should. Sorry about that! Anyways…
With 2014 now done and over with, the last news story from The World’s Finest has officially been posted up. As I mentioned on this site a year ago, it’s time to ease back on the overall workload of this site, and that starts with wrapping up the daily news post for the foreseeable future. Thousands and thousands of news posts, including three straight years of news posts at least five days a week, without a single weekday missed. And, with 2015 now here, that ends as The World’s Finest will return to its roots as an unbeatable resource for fans. An archive of content, a collection of materials covering a host of different shows and movies, a wealth of information – call it what you will, but The World’s Finest will be embracing that once again.
What does that all encompass? Well, don’t get alarmed … it’s all good! As the site shifts into a content destination, certain aspects of the site will stop while an emphasis will be placed on others. Daily news posts will cease, as I said, and no new subsites will be added to the site as of this time. Does that mean the end of updates and new material? No – there will always be new content added here, but the site will now just be easier for me to manage.
Site updates will continue going forward, reviews will still be posted, more content will be added (images, behind-the-scenes material, etc.), along with the odd interview. However, now, the site updates will now fall more onto the resource side of things. As I said, there will be no new additional subsites added to The World’s Finest going forward, with the possible exception of smaller pages dedicated to installments of the ongoing DC Universe Animated Original Movie line. Assorted DVD, Blu-ray, and other media releases will also still be covered. A new Batman: The Brave and The Bold Blu-ray? We’ll cover and review it – 100%. New soundtrack release? We’re on it – count on it. The only thing really changing is the end of daily news posts (which, honestly, it didn’t seem like a lot of people noticed anyway, given how so many stories broken here went unnoticed or stolen over the years).
A lot of factors played a role in this decision. For one, this site is too unwieldy for one person to handle. I cover about 95% of the work on the site, the forums and social media outlets. This includes emails, press work, reviews, finding reviewers and content, all of that. I spend many hours a day working on this site, volunteering countless hours. Juggling that with a regular job, a family, etc., and, well, something has to give. I have more responsibilities than ever before and there are just not enough hours in the day. But I can’t just abandon the site – no way. Given how long I’ve been working on this site, from its first iteration back in 1997, and how attached I am to it, I opted not to pass the torch. I did ask for help, more than a few times, but no one came to bat. So, I opted to scale the site responsibilities down to its skeleton in order to keep it going. I am expecting to reduce my presence and update rate overtime, though. The forum duties will be passed over to someone else entirely, for example. Still, with this, I’m able to balance my workload easier, have a bit of a better life, and explore other options.
This site is not going away. It’s not going anywhere. It’s going to stay right here. There’s no way I could let it go, anyways. All the content that you see here is not budging an inch. The only thing really changing is the removal of daily news updates and an easing back on the frequency of updates. This site will always be here for you to access and explore. In fact, to this day, there are some nifty secrets still not uncovered here on the site, which tells me there’s plenty for all of you still to explore.
For those worried, this isn’t the end. All you need to do is keep an eye on the “Site Updates” section to see that. Over the next few days, you’ll see the main page here change a little. The news will be replaced with links to the major site sections here, and the daily news shuffled off into an archive (where it will be readily accessible to look through). All portions of this site, I think, will be more easily accessible for those wanting to look around and just see what we have to offer. This site is the biggest DC Comics-animation (and Batman animation) site out there to this day, and I doubt that’ll change, even with the evolving trends of internet culture. But hey, no matter how much all of that changes, The World’s Finest will always be right here.
If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to drop a line. The social media portals for The World’s Finest will remain up until I decide what to do with them. I can be easily reached there, or through the contact links scattered throughout the site here. If all that fails, just catch me on the forums.
I’d like to express a quick “thanks” to all the folks who have helped me over the years. Zach, Ian, James, Barry, Eileen, Brian, Michael and a wealth of other people I can’t thank enough. This seems like a nice moment to tip my hat to them as I follow the site through a few minor changes and lifts. For your daily news fix, which plenty of you are clearly already getting elsewhere, I suggest you keep it tuned to Toonzone and DCAU Resource. The forums right here are also a good spot for any developments or concerns, as well. I may post the odd piece up from time to time there.
And that’s all from me for now, folks. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask. Don’t hesitate. That’s what I’m here for. Thanks!
-James

Year-End Sales Numbers For 2014 “DC Universe Animated Original Movie” Releases
Sales for the three 2014 titles in the DC Universe Animated Original Movie direct-to-video line from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment seemed to inch up this year, despite an overall mixed reaction to the products and major growth in the digital download market. Selling just over 1.3 million during the calendar year, the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line saw a successful year thanks to a highly-publicized reboot of the line and promotional tie-ins from the Batman brand. The numbers below number comes from the three DC Universe Animated Original Movie titles that debuted this year – Justice League: War, Son of Batman and Batman: Assault on Arkham. Note that all numbers listed in this articles are estimated physical home video numbers only, combining both the DVD and Blu-ray sales for the listed time period, based on research and market analysis.
Interest in Justice League: War, the first DC Universe Animated Original Movie 2014 title and the official “reboot” of the home video line, which will now put more of a focus on continuity and design consistency, moved 115,000 in its first week and nearly 225,000 unit in its first month of release. The title, which went on sale the week ending February 9th, 2014, was heavily promoted by the studio, and marketed as a big creative and thematic shift for the popular home video line. The push did work, with Justice League: War amassing nearly 400,000 physical units sold since hitting shelves despite a soft reaction from fans and critics. The brand’s new emphasis on continuity and visual consistency helped the title remain fairly active on the low-end of the sales spectrum for the majority of the year after the initial sales boom trickled off. It’s worth noting that sales between both the DVD and Blu-ray editions were nearly neck and neck during the year, with the DVD sales occasionally surpassing Blu-ray, partially due to legal download sales eating into Blu-ray numbers and the DVDs being targeted as more of an impulse buy. Legal download numbers are expected to account a small but notable percentage of Justice League: War sales.
The second feature-length DC Universe Animated Original Movie title of the year, Son of Batman, was also the highest-selling title of the line for the year. The title moved 165,000 in its first week, the week ending May 11th, 2014, and managed to hold in the following weeks, experiencing drops smaller than usual for the line. By the end of May 2014, sales reached an estimated 250,000. The title likely experienced a stronger hold due the overall “Batman 75” brand promotion during the year, as both Warner Bros. Entertainment and DC Comics celebrated the 75th anniversary of the popular comic icon, resulting in increased brand presence throughout the year. And due to said promotions and special tie-ins, Son of Batman managed to surpass 500,000 physical units moved during 2014. Despite an overall mixed response from both fans and critics, the title remains a popular seller and is still placed prominently on store shelves and in displays with other Batman paraphernalia. Sales for both the Blu-ray and DVD edition are nearly on par, akin to Justice League: War, though the Blu-ray edition remains the overall dominant selling format for the title.
Lastly, the final 2014 release under the DC Universe Animated Original Movie banner, Batman: Assault on Arkham, also benefited from the year-long “Batman 75” sales promotion, having moved close to 405,000 units since its release in early August 2014. The title moved 130,000 units for the week ending August 17th 2014, and managed to keep subsequent drop-offs small due to a host of factors. The most critically-acclaimed installment of the line for 2014, Batman: Assault on Arkham was able to benefit off the “Batman 75” brand promotion, it’s connection to the popular, highly-acclaimed Batman: Arkham video game series and the cult following of Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad – the main characters of the movie. Like Son of Batman, Batman: Assault on Arkham remains prominently placed on stores shelves and in displays as part of the ongoing “Batman 75” promotions. However, unlike Son of Batman and Justice League: War, sales between the DVD and Blu-ray editions are clearly in favor of Blu-ray, with the high-definition format accounting for over 60% of physical home video sales.
It’s worth noting that, this year, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment started selling legal downloads for many of their movie titles two weeks before the street date of the physical home video release. This gave many titles a two-week window of digital download sales before the subsequent DVD or Blu-ray titles were sold. This practice, which is starting to become the new standard for home video sales, does change the home video sales landscape, something that will likely become very apparent in 2015 as physical media becomes more and more a secondary market behind digital. Physical sales will likely shrink considerably next year, and it will be interesting to see how the market reacts. Next year will likely be a very crucial year for the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line, a film line dependent on home video sales.
Please note the above sales numbers do not take into account rental numbers, OnDemand numbers or legal download numbers. Sales numbers are estimates gathered through independent research, market analysis and various home media retailing outlets. Additionally, sale numbers from titles released before the 2014 calendar year are not taken into account. Also remember to take into account release date and character marketability when comparing sales numbers for each title.
More details on the entire DC Universe Animated Original Movie line can be found here at The World’s Finest special dedicated subsite. Please click on the links below to discuss the assorted releases covered in this article.
